ORLEANS, La. - UALR senior Jason Belt has been named to the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country
Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) All-Academic Track and Field Team. Belt was one
of 431 honorees across the country, a group that represents the sport's best in
both athletics and academics.
As a junior, Belt qualified for the NCAA West
Preliminaries in Austin, Texas, after finishing third at the Sun Belt Conference Outdoor Championships with a
toss of 52.44m in the men's discus throw. The Council Bluffs, Iowa-native went
on to place 10th in his flight and 37th overall with a
toss of 50.35m at the NCAA Preliminaries.
Belt's time at the West
Prelims ended a very successful junior season that saw him named the SBC
Outdoor Track Athlete of the Week (April 25) and move into second place on
UALR's all-time list in the shot put (15.37m), discus throw (52.85m) and hammer
throw (53.68m). In addition to his third place finish in the discus throw at
the SBC Outdoor Championships, Belt also placed ninth in the men's hammer throw
and 12th in the shot put.
A criminal justice major, Belt produced a perfect 4.00
GPA in the Spring 2012 semester and sports a 3.60 cumulative GPA.
To qualify for the USTFCCCA All-Academic Track and Field Team, the
student-athlete must have compiled a cumulative grade point average of 3.25 and
have met either of the following athletic standards: for the indoor season, a
student-athlete must have finished the regular season ranked in the national
top 96 in an individual event or ranked in the national top 48 (collective
listing) in a relay event on the official NCAA POP list provided by TFRRS.org;
for the outdoor season, a student-athlete must have participated in any round
of the NCAA Division I Championships (including preliminary rounds).
