AVCA Honors Volleyball Team for Academic Excellence

LEXINGTON, Ky. - For the third-consecutive academic year, the UALR volleyball team received the team award for academic excellence in 2011-2012 by the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA). The Trojans are one of 103 NCAA Division I teams and four Sun Belt Conference members to receive this distinction.

"We consider the academic excellence component as equally important as the volleyball component," UALR head coach Van Compton said. "With support from the university and guidance from the coaches, we strive to give the players all the necessary resources to succeed."

UALR and fellow conference member Western Kentucky are the only SBC members to have received academic recognition for three-straight years from the AVCA.

The award, which was initiated in the 1992-93 academic year, honors collegiate and high school volleyball teams that displayed excellence in the classroom during the school year. The teams must have maintained at least a 3.30 cumulative team grade point average on a 4.0 scale or a 4.10 cumulative team GPA on a 5.0 scale. The UALR volleyball team finished the 2011-2012 academic year with a 3.60 GPA.
