Join the Lettermen's AssociationLITTLE ROCK – In a new segment for LRTrojans.com, each month a different former Trojan will provide updates on what they have been doing since graduating from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock. This month's letterman is former men's basketball player Alex Garcia-Mendoza.
Garcia-Mendoza, who is now married to the former Carissa Noriega and working as a Construction Project Manager, played for the Trojans from 2009-11 and was an important member of Little Rock's 2011 NCAA Tournament team. He started all 36 games and averaged 8.9 points as a senior, but is perhaps best remembered for his last-second shot to beat Arkansas State at the Jack Stephens Center in 2010.
What is your current involvement with Little Rock Athletics?Fan! I follow all Trojans sports. I was a member of the Trojan Advisory Council while I was in Little Rock.
Why did you join the Lettermen's Association? I like to stay involved with the program as much as possible.
As a former basketball player, what are your thoughts of the current team and Jack Stephens Center? The team and the school have a great opportunity to make a big change. The school has done a great job re-branding the sports teams. I believe that the Trojans are heading in a good direction.
What's the best advice you've received? Take care of your grades and academics. It is extremely important to understand that you are a student first and that it should be a priority.
What is your fondest memory of your time as a Trojan?The NCAA Tournament in 2011.
How do you feel you make an impact on current student-athletes?Be an example to the athletes and let them see than you can have success on the court and off the court.
Why should others get involved with the Lettermen's Association or Little Rock Athletics? To be part of the change and make UALR a more desirable place for students.
What is something most people don't know about you?I love playing golf. I picked up golf after I graduated and it has been great for me as a natural competitor. I shot my best score (81) at Rebsamen Golf Course in Little Rock.
