Shania Berger had a 10-stroke improvement between the first and second round of the Little Rock/Arkansas State Invitational at Maumelle Country Club on Monday, capping her day with a field-low, 3-under-par 69.
Â
Berger began her day with a 79 in the first round, but the sophomore rebounded in the second round to become the only player in the 54-athlete field to post a sub-70 score on the day.
Â
Berger's big improvement was a huge help in moving the Trojans up from sixth place to fifth place after the first day as its team stroke total improved from 317 to 298 in the second round. Four of the five Trojan golfers competing with the team shot better in the second round than the first:
Hannah Ward improved by five strokes,
Sabrina Bonanno improved by three and
Emelie Blennow bettered her first round by one.
Â
Ward had the Trojans' second-best score in the second round, posting a 3-over-par 75. Bonanno shot a 76, Blennow posted a 78 and
Lucy Owen shot a 74.
Â
Competing as an individual,
Peyton Weaver and
Pernille Orlien both shot 84s in the second round.
Â
Heading into Tuesday's final round, Little Rock sits nine strokes back from Missouri State and Oral Roberts. The Bears and Golden Eagles are tied for third place at 606. Wichita State is in second place with an even 600 strokes, and Central Arkansas is the tournament's day-one leader with 594 strokes.
Â
On the individual side, Berger is tied for fourth place with a total of a 4-over-par 148. Ward and Bonanno are in a tie for 24th with a score of 155 (+11), Blennow is in 30th with a 157 (+13), Weaver is in 33rd with a 160 (+16), Orlien is in 39th with a 162 (+18) and Owen is in 40th with a 164 (+20).
Â
Berger is just two strokes off the leader, Missouri State's Verena Gimmy (146, +2).
Â
Little Rock's best golfer in the first round was Weaver. The sophomore shot a 4-over-par 76, tying her for 14th place after one round. Orlien shot a 6-over-par 78 to put her in a tie for 25th place. Both were competing as individuals, and their scores did not count toward the team score.
Â
Bonanno, Berger and Blennow all shot 7-over-par in the first round to finish with 79, while Ward and Owen were 8 over with 80s. The Trojans as a team were 25 over par in the first round and sat in seventh place to that point.
Â
Action at the Little Rock/Arkansas State Invitational concludes on Tuesday morning. The teams will tee off starting at 8:30. Little Rock's golfers will be paired with Missouri State and Arkansas State.
