Chastain Signs With Trojans for 2016-17 Season

LITTLE ROCK – Little Rock women's basketball coach Joe Foley has announced the signing of newcomer Sydney Chastain to join the Trojans beginning with the 2016-17 season. Chastain is an Oklahoma City, Okla., native who played guard at Westmoore High School.

Chastain racked up many accolades during her high school career including being named the Oklahoma winner of the Wendy's High School Heisman award in 2016. That honor recognizes high school athletes around the country who excel in scholarship, academics and leadership.

On the court, the 5-foot-7 Chastain broke multiple records during her high school career at Westmoore. She is the Jaguars' current all-time leader in assists (468) and steals (174), and she also set the school single-season assist record with 159. Chastain holds the Westmoore single-game assist record as well with 11.

"We feel like we got a steal in finding a guard of Sydney's caliber in the late signing period," Foley said. "We have looked for a guard of her caliber for over a year and finally found her. She has multiple assets. She can defend and is very versatile on offense. She is a leader with great character and a great student. We have found a good one in Sydney."

Chastain helped take the Jaguars from a 9-14 record her freshman year to a 24-3 mark when she was a senior. She averaged 8.7 points, 3.2 rebounds, 4.5 assists and 1.7 steals per game in her four years at Westmoore. She shot 42 percent from the field and 70 percent from the free-throw line. As a senior, she scored 8.9 points per game, had 5.7 assists and shot 45.8 percent from the floor.

"Sydney Chastain has been our starting point guard for four years, and she has been an integral part of the improvement of our team and program throughout those four years," Westmoore coach Andrea Guziec said. "We were always a better team with her on the floor running the show. She was always called upon to guard one of the other team's top offensive players as well and stepped up to that challenge with confidence every time."

Other accolades in Chastain's high school career include her placement on the 2016 Oklahoma Coaches Association All Star Girls Basketball Team, numerous All-Conference, All-Region, All-City and All-State accolades and multiple All-Tournament Team honors. Chastain also ran four years of cross country and track for Westmoore, qualifying for the state championship every season.

As recently as this week, Chastain was also named Big All-City Honorable Mention for Class 6A/5A/4A.

On the academic side, Chastain will graduate in the top 10 percent of her class and with a 4.38 grade point average.
