Sun Belt ReleaseÂ
LITTLE ROCK – After putting up the single best sprinting day in Little Rock track history on Friday,
Anika Charles was honored by the Sun Belt Conference on Wednesday when the league named her its Female Track Student-Athlete of the Week.
Â
Charles dashed her way to the top of the Trojan record book on Friday at the Mt. San Antonio College (Mt. SAC) Relays, setting new school records in the 100 and 200. Charles began her record-setting day by running the 100 in 11.71 seconds, .04 seconds faster than Pepper Foster's old school record that had stood since 2008. That time is currently third-best in the Sun Belt this year.
Â
Just a few short hours later in the 200, Charles again rewrote Little Rock history, finishing the 200 in 24.08 seconds. That time is .01 seconds better than Cherri Boykins ran way back in the year 2000. That time is now the fourth-best in the Sun Belt this season.
Â
Charles becomes the second consecutive Trojan to be named the Sun Belt's Female Track Student-Athlete of the Week and third this year after
Rickitha Hicks claimed the honor last Tuesday and
Noora Wallenius won the award following the season's first week of competition.
Â
Before 2016, the Trojans had never won more than one weekly Sun Belt outdoor award in a season. The team had won five total Sun Belt weekly awards in the previous 20 years and now has three this year alone.
Â
Little Rock has this weekend off, but it will return to the track on April 30 at the Memphis Invitational just two short hours away.
