LITTLE ROCK – Little Rock heads to Georgia for a pivotal two games, fighting for a conference tournament berth as the regular season begins to close out. The Trojans start off the weekend with a matchup versus Georgia Southern on Friday at 6:00 p.m. and then take on the Panthers of Georgia State on Sunday at 12 p.m.
Â
Trojan Report:
The Trojans are 2-3-2 in the Sun Belt conference and 7-7-2 overall, leaving them tied for the 8th seed with Louisiana
with eight points. Little Rock has only three games remaining and with those only being away games, where they have struggled all year, they will look for a big weekend. Good news is that the Trojans have one extra game to gain points over most of the league due to the postponing of the South Alabama game. Only South Alabama, Troy and Georgia Southern have three games remaining. Louisiana, as it stands now, holds the tie-breaker over Little Rock. Appalachian State sits behind the Trojans with seven points and Georgia State with five. Just ahead of the Trojans is ULM with nine points and barely in front of them is Georgia Southern with ten points. After this weekend plays out, Little Rock will know exactly what they will have to do Wednesday when they take on South Alabama for the final game of their season.
Â
Last Time Out:
Little Rock found it's scoring rhythm again this weekend putting three away goals in the win over Appalachian State and getting two in the late game heartbreak versus Texas State. The Trojans handled a struggling App State team behind the heroics of
Morgan Smocovich as she scored two goals from outside the box capping off a 3-1 victory.
Â
Little Rock would try to take the goal scoring momentum against the conference co-leading Texas State. The Trojans would try to break the game open early with numerous chances on net including a penalty kick that would be stopped.
Lillian Davis would get her first goal of her career in the 31st minute to send the Trojans up 1-0 going into the second half. Texas State would put in two goals in the second half giving the Bobcats a 2-1 lead and put fading hope in the Trojans' eyes. But, Little Rock would fight to the final whistle and earn a penalty kick with just 36 seconds left. Smocovich, with her hot foot, would slot the ball side netting and send the game into overtime. Just when it seemed Little Rock might get a point out of the match, the heartbreak struck as Texas State would get a free player on the back post from a cross and score the game-winning goal in the 106th minute.
Â
Trojans' Leaders:
Little Rock has shared the wealth this year with 12 different players scoring at least one goal this season.
Quin Wilkes,
Jaclyn Purvine, Erma Gudjonsdottir and
Morgan Smocovich have all scored three goals on the year while
Doro Greulich sits atop the stats with five. Wilkes and Greulich are both tied for fourth in the conference in shots.
Â
Scouting on Georgia Southern:
Georgia Southern is coming off a hot streak as they enter Friday's huge matchup against the Trojans. In the last four games the Eagles have gone 3-0-1 doubling opponents goal scoring with ten goals scored and only allowing five. The Eagles are lead behind attacker Fria Brattum who has five goals putting her tied for fourth in the conference. Georgia Southern has big wins over Arkansas State and Coastal Carolina while also getting points from Appalachian State and Georgia State.
Â
Scouting of Georgia State:
The Panthers sit last in the conference with five points. Their overall record is at 3-9-3 and only 1-5-2 in the Sun Belt Conference. They have struggled to hold opponents from scoring allowing 13 goals in the eight conference games played. Little Rock will have to keep tight guard Georgia State's midfielder/forward Monique Hundley who sits tied fourth in the conference in shots.
