LITTLE ROCK – Late game heartbreak strikes again as South Alabama scores an 86
th minute goal to win the match 1-0 over the Trojans Friday afternoon in Mobile.
Â
It was a tale of two halves for the Trojans. Little Rock pressed the issue in the first half out shooting the Jaguars 9-3, but neither team could find the net keeping the score 0-0 into halftime. In the second half, South Alabama came out with a sense of urgency and found themselves with ample opportunity to score but the Little Rock defense held strong. Both teams found their chances on net but neither team still could break through.
Â
With the Jags out shooting the Trojans 13-5 in the second half, a chance finally came for South Alabama in the 86
th minute. Jags Rio Hardy would slip through a ball to Korey Dixon where she was left one on one with
Megan Swanson. A gentle chip would beat Swanson and put the Jaguars up 1-0 in the final minutes of the match. The Trojans would launch the ball into the box for a few last minute efforts but would fall short and the clock would run out.
Â
Little Rock ended their regular season with an overall record of 9-8-2 and conference record of 4-4-2. For now, the Trojans remain in the fifth seed going into the tournament with only the Georgia Southern versus Troy game Sunday left in the regular season.
Â
Scenarios and First Round Matchups:
Â
With a Georgia Southern Win, the Trojans would slide into the sixth seed and Georgia Southern would move all the way up into the third seed. That would make the first round matchup for the Trojans be against the Eagles, who Little Rock just recently beat 3-1.
Â
If the game is to tie, Little Rock will remain in the fifth seed and will have a first round match up versus Troy in the fourth seed. Little Rock fell to Troy on the road 0-1 earlier this month.
Â
If Troy is to win the match, Little Rock would still remain in the fifth seed but Arkansas State would then be the fourth seed and play the Trojans in the first-round matchup.
Â
Conference Tournament:
The Trojans will await their fate on seeding, but have now reached the conference tournament for a fifth year in a row and keeps Coach Blewitt a perfect five for five for his stint at Little Rock.
Â
The first round of the Sun Belt Conference Tournament begins on Wednesday Nov. 1 in Foley, Alabama.
