BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Little Rock men's track and field team had seven scoring efforts, six new additions to the team's top-10 historical records on their way to a fourth-place showing at the Jaguar Invitational at the Birmingham Crossplex on Sunday.
The Trojans scored 43.5 points as a team to finish in fourth in the field of 16 teams.
Dez Mapps and
Michael McGruder qualified for the finals of the 60-meter dash by finishing fourth and fifth in the prelims, crossing the finish line in 6.83 and 6.85 seconds. Those immediately became the new fourth- and fifth-best times in program history.
In the finals, McGruder, Alabama State's Josh David and Mapps all finished with times of 6.82 seconds. McGruder, though, broke the tiebreaker in the thousands of a second, posting a time of 6.812 seconds to finish tied for third with David who also finished in 6.812. Mapps came in fifth with a time of 6.814 seconds. McGruder scored 5.5 points for Little Rock and Mapps scored four points.
Also in the prelims,
Terance Goodwin was 32nd in 7.35 seconds.
Mapps and McGruder were back at it in the 200, finishing third and sixth to combine for nine points for the Trojans. Mapps finished in 21.59 seconds for the new seventh-best time in team history, and McGruder was right behind him in 21.63 seconds for the new eighth-best time in team history.
Kennedy Chumba scored three points for the Trojans in the mile, placing sixth overall in a time of 4:17.37. That moves Chumba into the eighth-fastest time in program history in the mile.
Emilio Medina also ran the mile, placing 27th in 4:42.74.
In the 60-meter hurdles,
Zodani Francois qualified for the finals with a time of 8.44 seconds. In the finals, Francois finished third in a time of 8.41 seconds to score six points for Little Rock.
Antonio Coleman was 14th in the prelims with a time of 8.87 seconds, the new second-fastest time in program history.
Tyler Davis scored two points for the Trojans in the 5K with his seventh-place finish. Davis put up a time of 16:13.90.
With its regular season now complete, the Trojans will prepare for the Sun Belt Championship on February 20-21 at the Birmingham Crossplex.
