LITTLE ROCK – For the third-straight year, the Little Rock Golf Shamble proved to be an enormous success as nearly $72,000 was raised to benefit both the Trojan men's and women's golf teams. The event, held Monday, August 28 at Pleasant Valley Country Club, also served as a way to recognize Dan Snider for his contributions to the Little Rock golf programs and the Little Rock golf community.
"I am so humbled at the amazing support by the Little Rock Community year after year for our shamble fundraiser," said Director of Golf
Jake Harrington. "This was the third year of the tournament and it is great to see not only the familiar faces that play in the tournament each year but also the new ones that came out to play and enjoy a day celebrating Dan Snider and our golf program.
"This year we had a record turnout for the tournament and I couldn't be more proud to wear the Little Rock logo and to be able to honor Dan Snider with what turned out to be an amazing day of golf with our Little Rock family."
"It was a great day for our program, especially to see the number of alumni that came back to play in the event," said Women's Head Coach
Bridgett Norwood. "Our goal has been to build up our alumni association and we had 36 former players play in this year's event. We had a large contingent of local alumni come out, and even had some travel in from Chicago, Missouri and Texas to be a part of this event. It's fantastic to see so many of our former players come back and want to be a part of supporting this program."
Snider's impact on the local golf community is well known, boasting over 40 years of teaching experience in Texas and Arkansas. His accolades include induction into the South Central Section PGA Hall of Fame in 2011 and the Arkansas Golf Hall of Fame in 2013.
Recipient of the Arkansas PGA Instructor of the Year award 14 times, Snider has been nominated as the National PGA Teaching Professional of the Year four times. He was named the PGA Club Professional of the Year in 2014 as his students include many PGA tour players, including Glenn Day, Bryce Molder and Dickey Pride.
A total of 35 teams competed in the Shamble, playing with current and former members of the Little Rock golf programs. The group consisting of Stan Payne, Steve Holden, Brent Winston and Will Elliott won the first flight, defending their title from 2016, while the group of Patty Snider (Dan's wife), Dennis James, Dr. Bill Henry and Scott Noble were the second flight winners.
Additionally, there were four holes that held closest to the pin competitions, which was won by George Cronkhite (number two), Keith Evans (number five), Jim Johnson (number 13) and Ron Whitaker (number 17). Cody Bryant also captured the long drive of the day on hole nine.
Sponsored by Pepsi, Diamond Bear, Smart Chevrolet, Glazer's and Canteen Vending, the outing including nearly 140 players, including members of the Little Rock men's and women's golf teams serving as "celebrity" players in each group.
