IOWA CITY, Iowa – Two more school records fell for Little Rock swimming and diving in day three of the Missouri Valley Conference Championship at the University of Iowa Recreation and Wellness Center on Friday.
The first record to fall was in the 100-yard backstroke preliminaries as Laura Ruiz Astorga placed fifth going into the finals with a time of 55.87. Her time was .34 seconds faster than her own time set at last year's MVC Championship. Ruiz Astorga would finish fifth in the A-Final with a time of 56.23.
Tori Fryar was next up to break a record in the 200-yard freestyle as she finished the fourth in the A-final with a time of 1:50.28. Fryar smashed her own record of 1:51.52 set in last year's MVC Championship — 1.24 seconds better. Claire Bristow would finish fourth in the B-Final with a time of 1:52.48 and earned 12th-place overall.
Imre van Huyssteen finished sixth in the 100-yard breaststroke A-Final just shy from the school record with a time of 1:04.27.
Senior diver Samantha Gray qualified for tomorrow's three-meter final as she posted the seventh-highest prelim score of the day at 218.13. Freshman Sierra Thain also qualified with a 12th-place finish scoring a 199.53
In the 400-yard medley relay, the team of Ruiz Astorga, van Huyssteen, Isabelle Finzen and Emma Doll took sixth with a time of 3:48.12.
Little Rock fell back down to sixth place with 238.5 points. Missouri State upped its lead to 522.5 points while Southern Illinois maintained second with 433.5 points. Northern Iowa remained in third with 333.5 points, and Indiana State stays in fourth with 289 points. Illinois State jumped Little Rock with 266 points. Evansville remains behind the Trojans with 168 points, and Valparaiso in last with 88 points.
Little Rock will wrap up its 2017-18 season on Saturday in the fourth and final day of the MVC Championships.
