LITTLE ROCK – For the first time as a Trojan, Little Rock's
Shanieke Watson earned Sun Belt Conference Outdoor Track Athlete of the Week honors on Wednesday afternoon.
Â
This past weekend at the Rhodes Invitational in Memphis, Watson placed fourth in the 5,000-meter with a time of 17:30.30 — the seventh-fastest time in program history and the second-fastest in the Sun Belt this season. Her time is also the 19th-fastest in the NCAA West Region and the 33rd-fastest nationally.
Â
She followed that up by placing second in the one-mile run with a time of 5:05.39. When converted to a 1500-meter time, Watson's time of 4:42.76 is the second-fastest in the Sun Belt this season.
Â
Watson becomes the first Trojan woman to earn Sun Belt Outdoor Track Athlete of the Week honors since
Anika Charles in April 2016, and she's just the seventh to earn the honor in program history.
Watson will return to action at the Victor Lopez Classic hosted by Rice University in Houston, Texas, beginning on Friday.
