STILLWATER, Okla. -- UALR trailed by one at the
half, but couldn't overcome the 71 percent shooting percentage of Oklahoma
State in the second half and fell to the sixth-ranked Cowboys, 90-65,
Tuesday night at Gallagher-Iba Arena. The loss drops the Trojans to 1-1 on
the year; OSU is 2-0.
After scoring 37 in the season opener against
Southern Arkansas, Brandon Freeman led UALR with 25 points, while Zack
Wright scored 14 and Columbus Willis added 13.
The Trojans trailed 32-31 at the half, despite
shooting 52 percent from the field and outrebounding the Cowboys, 21-12,
in the first period. OSU committed no turnovers in the first half and made
7-of-11 from the free throw line. UALR did not attempt a free throw in the
first half.
Freeman opened the second half with a jumper to give
the Trojans a 33-32 lead, the last time UALR would hold the advantage. OSU
got the lead to double digits, 48-38, when Terrence Crawford drove inside
for a basket with 15:26 to play.
"We got out-toughed and out-coached in the second
half," UALR coach Steve Shields said. "Every person in the country knows
about OSU basketball, and Eddie Sutton has done a great job with this
program."
Freeman scored 16 in the first half, including
4-of-5 from three-point range, before the Cowboys strengthened their
defense on the senior from Greenwood, S.C.
"Freeman is a very good player," Shields said. OSU
"made it very difficult for him to get shots in the second half."
John Lucas led Oklahoma State with 22 points and
scored 18 in the second half. Joey Graham had 16 and 7-2 center Frans
Steyn scored 11.
The week doesn't get any easier for UALR, as the
Trojans travel to Atlanta to play 2004 national champion runner-up Georgia
Tech on Friday. That game begins at 6 p.m. Central.
