ATLANTA, Ga. -- Brandon Freeman scored 18 points and
Zack Wright added 13, but UALR fell to the third-ranked Georgia Tech
Yellow Jackets, 79-54, Saturday night in Atlanta. The loss moves UALR to
1-2 on the year, while Tech improves to 3-0.
UALR struggled out of the gate. The Trojans scored
their first basket at the 17:57 mark, but didn't hit another field goal
until Wright worked his way inside for a layup with 9:39 to play. The
Trojans finally got on track and cut the Tech lead to 38-21 at the half,
with Wright scoring seven in the first period. UALR shot just 29 percent
from the field in the first half, hitting 9-of-31 field goal attempts and
only one of its first 11 three-point shots.
Freeman hit a trey to open the second period to cut
the Tech advantage to 14, 38-24, but UALR couldn't get any closer than 13
the rest of the way.
Darius Eason threw down a dunk with 17:00 minutes
left to pull within 45-32, and a jumper from Freeman with 16:14 left also
pulled UALR to within 13. A trey and a layup by Tech's B.J. Elder
bookended a jumper by Will Bynum to put the Jackets up by 20, 54-34, with
13:41 to play. Tech eventually extended the lead to 27 with 2:27 to
play.
After the game, UALR coach Steve Shields said the
Trojans "are disappointed right now because they know we didn't answer the
call in the first four or five minutes" of the game.
"But I'm proud that they kept batting to start the
second half," Shields said. "We got off to a good start in the second
half, and I felt like we still had a chance."
Richard Hardman grabbed 13 rebounds for UALR, while
Wright dished out six assists and pulled down four rebounds.
Elder led the Yellow Jackets with 23 points. Isma'il
Muhammad scored 13, Bynum added 11 and Jack Jarrett hit for 10.
The Trojans return home on Tuesday to host Southern
University before traveling to Springfield, Mo., to play in the SMS Price
Cutter Classic. UALR plays Southeastern Louisiana on Friday, and then
faces either Youngstown State or host Southwest Missouri State on
Saturday.
