Three Trojans scored in double figures as UALR held
off a late charge by Southern and downed the Jaguars 75-60 Tuesday night
at Alltel Arena.
Brandon Freeman led UALR with 14 points, Richard
Hardman scored a season-high 13 and Darius Eason dropped in 12 for the
Trojans (2-2). Southern's Chris Alexander led all scorers with 21 points
while Jarvis Vaughn scored 13 and Peter Cipriano grabbed 11 rebounds for
the Jaguars (2-2).
UALR held a 15-point lead at the half, 36-21, but
the Jaguars slowly chipped into it. Southern cut the Trojans' advantage to
single digits on a couple of occasions early in the second period, but
UALR eventually got it up to 16, 53-37, on a free throw by Michael
Pridgeon with 12:16 to play. Alexander then spurred a 13-0 Southern run,
scoring on three layups to help the Jaguars cut the score to 53-50 with
10:02 to play, prompting UALR coach Steve Shields to take a 30-second
timeout.
His team responded, with Zack Wright nailing a
three-pointer and then driving inside for a layup to key a 13-4 UALR run
that put the Trojans up 67-54 with 5:00 remaining in the game. A dunk by
Eason with 2:07 left put UALR back up by 15, 71-56.
"This was a good win for us," Shields said after the
game. "We gave great effort in the first half and held Southern to 31
percent shooting."
Shields was quick to praise the play of his big men
in containing Cipriano, who came into the game averaging 23 points and 13
rebounds.
"We held him to eight," Shields said, "four in each
half."
Besides Eason's 12 points, Pridgeon and Columbus
Willis scored nine each, and Shields said they had help from Wright.
"Zack Wright did a good job of finding the post
players," Shields said of the sophomore guard who finished the night with
11 assists and eight points.
UALR now hits the road again to play in the
PriceCutter Classic hosted by Southwest Missouri State University in
Springfield, Mo. The Trojans play Southeastern Louisiana at 5;30 p.m. on
Friday and then take on either SMS or Youngstown State at either 5:30 or 8
p.m. on Saturday.
