Four Trojans scored in double figures as UALR took
an impressive 76-56 win over St. Bonaventure Friday night at Alltel Arena.
Brandon Freeman led all scorers with 22 points.
Darius Eason scored 16, Richard Hardman hit for 14 and Columbus Willis
came off the bench to score 10 for UALR (5-4).
Brian Gibbs led the Bonnies (0-7) with 14 points,
while Ahmad Smith and Wade Dunston combined for 23 points.
St. Bonaventure scored the opening basket, and that
was the only time UALR trailed in the game. The Trojans built a
double-digit lead just over six minutes into the game, as a three-pointer
by Freeman put UALR up 16-6 with 13:53 to play in the first half.
"We got out to a great start, especially with our
rebounding" UALR coach Steve Shields said. "We had six offensive rebounds
in the first half."
Hardman led UALR with seven rebounds, while Eason
grabbed six.
"Overall, we showed great effort tonight," Shields
said. "We shared the ball extremely well tonight."
UALR notched 15 assists in the game, with Zack
Graber leading the way with seven.
The Trojans took a 35-22 lead into the half, and led
by as many as 22 on two occasions, the last coming on a jumper by Michael
Pridgeon with 1:15 remaining that gave UALR a 76-54 advantage.
The Trojans shot 53.8 percent (28-of-52) from the
field while holding the Bonnies to 40.7 percent (22-of-54. Also, the
Trojans attempted just nine three-pointers, which pleased Shields.
"We don't need to shoot 21 threes like we did
against Mississippi State," he said. "We do much better when we shoot like
we did tonight."
Friday's game marked the first in a five-game
homestand for the Trojan. UALR returns to Alltel Arena on Monday to play
McNeese State in the Trojans' final game before a nine-day break for the
holidays. The Trojans will host St. Gregory's University on Dec. 29 and
then play Harding at 2 p.m. on Jan. 2.
