UALR takes 73-67 win at Arkansas State

JONESBORO -- Richard Hardman's double-double and
Brandon Freeman's 17 points led UALR to a 73-67 win over Arkansas State
Thursday night at the Convocation Center. The win improves UALR to 15-8 on
the year and 7-4 in Sun Belt Conference play.
Hardman recorded 13 points and 12 rebounds while
Zack Graber and Zack Wright scored 10 points each.
UALR trailed by seven, 30-23, with 4:13 left in the
first half. A trey by Graber and two free throws from Wright cut the ASU
advantage to 30-28 with 2:58 to play. The Indians got the lead back up to
five, 35-30, with 1:38 remaining before Columbus Willis hit one free throw
and Michael Pridgeon grabbed a defensive rebound and threw a perfect
outlet pass to Freeman, who slipped between two ASU defenders for a layup
with the clock running down. UALR was down by only two, 35-33, going into
halftime.
The Trojans went on a 15-2 run to open the second
half, with Hardman providing six of those points. He began the run with a
tip-in of a missed Eason layup 39 seconds into the period and also hit one
jumper and a layup as UALR took a 48-37 lead with 15:05 remaining.
ASU then went on a scoring streak of its own and cut
the UALR lead to two, 50-48, with 10:43 to play. Layups from Wright and
Willis put the Trojans back up 54-48 with 9:23 left before ASU's Isaac
Wells hit a jumper in the paint with 9:05 to play. Freeman answered with a
trey for a 57-50 UALR advantage with 8:57 remaining.
The Trojans extended their lead to double digits
again, going ahead 65-55 on another tip-in by Hardman. ASU's J.J.
Montgomery then hit one free shot, Dereke Tipler converted a three-point
play and Dewarick Spencer made two from the line to cut UALR's lead to
65-61 with 2:14 left.
With 1:12 remaining, Willis tipped in a missed layup
by Wright for a six-point UALR advantage, 67-61, with 1:12 left. Tipler
then made one free throw for the Indians, and Freeman converted one of two
from the line for a 68-62 UALR lead with 58 seconds left.
Tipler then made one of two from the line again, but
UALR answered with two free throws by Willis with 30 seconds to play for a
70-63 UALR lead.
Lorenzo Hampton's basket for ASU made it 70-65
before Josh Jacobs made one free shot for a 71-65 lead with 10 seconds
left. After Tipler's layup with four seconds to play, Freeman made two
free throws with three seconds left to close out the scoring.
UALR has a rare Saturday off this week before two
road games next week. The Trojans continue Sun Belt Conference play with a
game at Western Kentucky on Thursday before playing at Bowling Green State
University on Saturday as part of the ESPN Bracket Buster.
