BOWLING GREEN, Ohio -- Richard Hardman scored a
career-high 27 points and grabbed 12 rebounds, but UALR couldn't overcome
a 17-point second-half deficit and fell to Bowling Green, 74-66, Saturday
afternoon in an ESPN Bracket Buster game.
The loss moves the Trojans to 16-9 on the year. BGSU
moves to 16-7.
The Falcons led by 13 at the half, 34-21, and scored
the first two baskets of the second half to take a 38-21 lead with 19:14
remaining.
The Trojans refused to fold, however, and slowly
chipped into the Bowling Green lead. A layup by Zack Wright with 12:52
left brought UALR to within eight, 47-39. A three-pointer by Brandon
Freeman cut the Falcon advantage to single digits, 51-44, with 11:34 to
play.
UALR then went on a 12-5 run to tie the game 56-56
with 7:40 left. Hardman contributed a three-point play, two more free
throws and a trey during UALR's streak.
Bowling Green then went on a scoring run of its own
as Josh Reimold scored eight in a 10-1 Falcon run that left BGSU up 66-57
with 1:51 to play. Hardman hit a jumper to cut the lead to seven, 66-59,
with 1:40 to play. After UALR coach Steve Shields called his last timeout
after Hardman's bucket, the Trojans were forced to foul to stop the clock
the rest of the game, and Bowling Green hit eight of 10 free shot attempts
in the final 1:24.
Brandon Freeman scored 17 for the Trojans while Zack
Wright came off the bench to score 10. Darius Eason scored eight -- and
threw down two strong dunks that briefly silenced the crowd of 3,052 --
and blocked two shots. Wright and Zack Graber each dished out four
assists.
Reimold led Bowling Green with 29 points while Josh
Almanson scored 27. Reimold and Almanson were the only Falcons to score in
the second half until John Floyd made one free throw 1:24 left in the
game.
After shooting 22.7 percent in the first half, UALR
rebounded and hit 16-of-29 (.552) in the second period.
The Trojans will return to Alltel Arena to close out
the regular season. UALR hosts New Mexico State at 8 p.m. Thursday in
another ESPN-Plus game, and then plays its last regular-season game at
Alltel with a 1 p.m. matchup against Louisiana-Lafayette, game that will
be broadcast on ESPN2.
