Privateers Outlast Trojans In Overtime, 67-66

Box Score

NEW ORLEANS ? Carl Blair delivered a game-winning layup with 34 seconds remaining in overtime to lead New Orleans (7-11, 2-5) to a 67-66 win over the UALR men's basketball team at Lakefront Arena. The Privateers connected on 11-of-24 three-point attempts in the win, led by a career-high 20 points from Devin McDonald, who made 6-of-9 from beyond the arc.

Sophomore Courtney Jackson led the Trojans (4-13, 0-6) with nine rebounds and a career-high 16 points off 7-of-9 shooting, but missed two foul shots with 17.1 seconds to go and the Trojans down by one. UALR had one last chance to win, calling a timeout with 6.6 seconds remaining, but junior Solomon Bozeman missed a potential game winner as time expired.

UALR outshot the Privateers 49.0 percent to 42.1 percent in the loss, but the Trojans converted just 11-of-19 trips to the foul line (57.9 percent). Charles Carmouche added 18 points for UNO, while Blair chipped in 10 points, five rebounds and eight assists.

“I thought our guys gave an unbelievable effort tonight,” said UALR head coach Steve Shields. “The stat you can look at that is most glaring and didn't allow us to separate ourselves was our free-throw percentage. But you have to give New Orleans credit. They made some shots and came up with some key plays late.”

The Trojans played to a +11 rebounding margin, led by Jackson's game-high nine boards. Junior Alex Garcia-Mendoza added 12 points off 5-of-10 shooting, while Bozeman chipped in eight points and a career-high 10 assists in the loss.

The Privateers went 9:07 without a field goal in the first half and UALR was able to parlay UNO's struggles into an 18-3 run. New Orleans opened the game by making its first three shots, including two three pointers, to jump out to a quick 8-2 lead, but missed the mark on its next eight attempts.

A dunk by Johann Mpondo made it an 8-2 contest with 18:16 on the clock, but it would mark UNO's last field goal until a three pointer by Carl Blair at the 9:09 mark ? a stretch of 9:07 without a field goal.

The Trojans put together an 18-3 run, taking the lead for the first time off back-to-back three pointers by junior Matt Mouzy, to take a 22-14 lead with 8:28 remaining. UALR built its lead as high as nine points, 30-21, in the first half, but the Privateers connected on 6-of-12 from three-point range in the first half to make it a 35-32.

The Trojans shot 52.0 percent from the field in the first half and enjoyed a +8 rebounding margin. Jackson led all players with nine points and six rebounds at the break, going 4-of-5 from the field.

The two teams traded buckets for most of the second half in a game which featured five tie scores and 14 lead changes. UALR held a 50-48 lead with 10:34 left to play, but would go the next 8:23 without a field goal before senior Wayne Burton scored a bucket in the paint with 2:11 to go.

Trailing 60-58, UALR tied things up with 38 seconds remaining when Burton backed his defender into the paint and banked in the tying shot. The Trojans got a defensive stop on UNO's next possession and called timeout with 5.9 seconds left in the game to set up their final play. Garcia-Mendoza pushed the ball up the court and got it to Mouzy at the top of the arc, but the Jonesboro, Ark.-native's potential game-winner from 25-feet away rattled in and out.

UALR held a 66-65 lead with 1:01 remaining in overtime after a jumper by Garcia-Mendoza, but Blair got past his man for an uncontested layup which proved to be the difference.

The Trojans return to action Saturday night when they host Louisiana-Lafayette at 7 p.m.
