Box Score STILLWATER,
Okla.
- The UALR baseball team (15-10) fell by final score of 9-7 to Oklahoma State
(14-11) Tuesday night at Allie P. Reynolds Stadium. The Trojans led 7-6 through
seven and a half innings of play, but OSU plated three runs in the bottom of
the eighth and held UALR scoreless in their final set of at bats to hang on for
the victory.
Gabe Weidenaar (1-1) picked up the win for OSU after
giving up one run on two hits in 2.0 innings of work. Junior Bubba Cooper (1-2) was saddled with the
loss for the Trojans, as the right-hander surrendered two runs on one hit in
1.0 innings.
Senior Cameron
Bentley led the UALR bats with three hits, one run and one RBI. Junior Myles Parma and senior Nick Rountree each put up two hits in
the loss. Sophomore Bryson Thionnet hit
a two-run homer in the top of the fourth to give UALR its first lead and added
two runs scored.
After Oklahoma State went up 1-0 in the bottom of the
first on an RBI single by Mark Ginther, UALR grabbed a 2-1 lead thanks to
Thionnet's two-run homer in the top of the fourth. Senior Sean Bignall ripped a one-out single to left to put a man on, and
Thionnet blasted a 2-0 pitch over the left field fence to give the Trojans'
their first lead of the game.
The Cowboys provided a prompt answer, putting up two
runs on two hits in the bottom of the fourth to retake the lead. Mark Ginther
doubled to lead off the frame, while the next batter, Trey Whatley, ripped a
single to center that plated Ginther from second. Whatley moved to third on a
groundout, then scored on a wild pitch by junior Tyler Buckley to give OSU a 3-2 lead.
The Trojans were able to take a 5-3 lead in the top
half of the sixth. Rountree led off the inning with a single, and Bignall was
hit by a pitch in the next at bat to give UALR a pair of baserunners with no
outs. A sacrifice bunt by junior Blake Johnson
advanced both runners, while a passed ball on a 3-0 count allowed Thionnet to
go to first and Rountree to slide into home and tie the score at three. An
infield single by Guarno plated Bignall, and another RBI single by Bentley
scored Thionnet to put UALR up two.
OSU then retook the lead in the bottom half of the
seventh, scoring three runs on two hits while being helped by two UALR walks to
lead off the inning. Gage Green and Hunter Bailey both walked on 3-2 counts to
give the Cowboys two baserunners with no outs, and a single to right field by Jared
Womack plated Green for the first OSU run of the frame. A groundout to third
allowed Bailey to score the tying run, while a two-out single off the bat of
Ginther plated Womack to give the Cowboys a 6-5 lead.
A single by Parma scored two runs and allowed UALR to
go back up a run in the top of the eighth. After junior David Guarno walked and Bentley doubled to lead off the inning,
Parma knocked a single to left that was misplayed by the OSU left fielder,
allowing Bentley and Guarno to score and make it a 7-6 game.
But OSU would answer quickly, again retaking the lead
with three runs on two hits in the bottom of the eighth. A hit batsman and two
issued walks loaded the bases for OSU with just one out. A two-RBI single by
Jarrett Higgins put Oklahoma State on top by one, and an RBI double by Womack
to right plated the third and final run of the inning to push OSU's lead to
two, 9-7.
The Trojans got their leadoff man, Bignall, on to start
the ninth in their final set of at bats. Bignall drew a walk, and then went to
second on a wild pitch. But X was able to get the final three UALR batters of
the game out on strikes to end any hopes of a UALR rally.
UALR returns to action with the first of a three-game
set against WKU on Friday in Bowling Green, Ky. First pitch is slated for 6
p.m.
