DALLAS – Little Rock volleyball (0-1) started the 2016 season with a three-set loss (13-25, 21-25, 11-25) to the UTSA Roadrunners (1-0) in the opening match of the SMU DoubleTree Classic at Moody Coliseum on Friday morning.
Carolee Dillard led the Trojans with six kills and five blocks (one solo and four assisted). Her blocking effort gave her 434 for her career, tying for the second-most in program history.
The first set saw UTSA take a 25-13 win. Dillard and
Edina Selimovic led the Trojans with two kills each while
Aubrey Wilson led the team with two block assists.
Marina Avram and
Sydnee Martin each recorded an ace during the frame.
After trailing 12-1 to begin the second set, Little Rock came storming back with a 7-1 run, cutting UTSA's lead to 13-8. Down 19-13, the Trojans rallied to cut the Roadrunners' lead to three at 19-16. With set point looming at 24-19, Little Rock managed to rattle off three points on a UTSA service error, a UTSA attack error and an ace by Martin. A final kill by UTSA's Jessica Waldrip gave the Roadrunners a 2-0 lead for the match.
The Trojans once again got off to a slow start in the third set as the Roadrunners jumped out to an 11-3 lead. Little Rock scored three straight points on a
Veronica Marin kill and two blocks by Selimovic, but UTSA took a 15-6 lead with three kills and a Trojan attack error. The Roadrunners closed out the match on a 10-5 run to give the Trojans their first loss.
Edina Selimovic finished with five total blocks (one solo and four assisted) while getting three kills.
Taylor Lindberg had the second-most kills for Little Rock with four and led the Trojans with a .273 hitting percentage.
The Trojans will look for their first win of the season later this afternoon against Montana at 4:30 p.m.
