LITTLE ROCK – The Trojan soccer team had defended well and had some of the better offensive chances in the game, but South Alabama scored once early and held on for a 1-0 victory at the Coleman Sports & Recreation Complex on Sunday afternoon.
Â
The Jaguars got their goal in the 11th minute off a corner kick. Jemma Purfield took the corner, arcing it into the 6-yard box where Hannah Godfrey was waiting for the cross. Godfrey headed the ball into the net for the 1-0 lead.
Â
The Trojans' best opportunity of the game may have been a
Fali Garuba breakaway in the second half. Garuba's shot from inside the box was swatted away by Jaguars goalie Justice Stanford to preserve the shutout.
Shannon Shields also had a chance with two minutes remaining on a long shot from distance, but Stanford jumped to prevent the ball from dipping in under the crossbar.
Â
Sara Cavanagh got the start in net and made six saves, the second-highest single-game total in her career.
Â
Little Rock will have seven days to prepare for its next game, a home contest against Arkansas State on Sunday. The Trojans and Red Wolves will kick off at 1 p.m.
