NEW ORLEANS, La. – For the third time this season, senior
Veronica Marin has been named the Sun Belt Conference's Defensive Player of the Week, announced today by the league office.
Marin's third weekly honor comes on the heels of another stellar performance by the Tulcea, Romania native as she helped guide the Trojans to a weekend road split. Marin finished with 15 total blocks, averaging 1.88 blocks per set, while adding 27 kills and a .434 attack percentage.
In the 3-0 win at Appalachian State, Marin just missed her third double-double of the year, finishing with eight blocks and nine kills, hitting .444 offensively. Against Coastal Carolina, Marin tallied seven blocks, including four solo, with a season-high 18 kills and a .429 attack percentage with a team-best three service aces.
For the season, Marin leads the Sun Belt Conference in both total blocks (124) and blocks per set (1.65), ranking first and second, respectively, at the national level. She continues to establish herself as a dual threat for the Trojans as her .365 attack percentage ranks third in the league while her 23 service aces ranks seventh in the Sun Belt.
Marin continues to climb the Trojan record books as her 377 career blocks ranks sixth all-time and fourth in the rally-scoring era. She is already on the cusp of cracking the top-10 for blocks in a season with at least 10 matches remaining and remains within striking distance of joining the 1,000-kill club, currently sitting at 806 for her career.
After four-straight road matches, Marin and the rest of the Trojans return home for a pair of matches at the Jack Stephens Center this weekend against their southern neighbors. Little Rock hosts ULM Friday, October 12, followed by a match with Louisiana on Saturday, October 13. Both matches get underway at 6:30 p.m.
