Little Rock Forces Fourth-Straight Double OT Tie

LITTLE ROCK – The Little Rock Trojan soccer team (3-5-6, 0-1-4 Sun Belt) drew its fourth-straight tie this evening against an aggressive Coastal Carolina squad (4-5-2, 2-1-1 Sun Belt), earning yet another point toward Sun Belt play. Not only does this give the Trojans the most draws in the country, it also marks the most ties in a single season in program history (6), one more than in 2015.

"I'm delighted with another point and another clean sheet," said head coach Mark Foster. "I have so much for respect for Coastal Carolina. They've been one of the best teams in the league for several years and have done a great job, so any time you play a team like that, you need a bit of luck and we got that a few times tonight."

The Chanticleers hit the goalpost three times throughout the match, once in the first period and once in each overtime period, just barely off target. While keeper Julia Curatolo was able to clinch eight saves, matching her career-high from earlier this season at Georgia Southern, the defense also was in position to block several shots despite Coastal Carolina's ability to create chances.

"I'm proud of our team's attitude and effort as always," added Foster. "Now, in the final third of our season, we need to show a bit better quality. Our approach to things is fantastic, our defense is strong, and we play with freedom in overtime the way other teams don't, but we need that extra push to turn draws into wins."

The character definitely shows in the young team, as the Trojans have played in double overtime six times so far this year without conceding. Morgan Smocovich remains a key piece in coordinating the midfield action well, even bringing the ball ahead to lead Little Rock with three shots on the night, one of which was on goal. Jessica Carmichael also earned ample playing time as the freshman continues to improve throughout the season, driving up the field several times to set up potential opportunities.

The Trojans will have a full week to prepare to compete in their final two scheduled home matches. Next Friday, Oct. 11, Little Rock hosts ULM at 6:00 p.m. CT. On Sunday, Oct. 13, there will be a tailgate to get ready for the final home game against Appalachian State. The tailgate will begin around noon, while kickoff is set for 1:00 p.m.
