LITTLE ROCK - The Little Rock swimming and diving schedule has officially been announced by head coach Amy Burgess, with the Trojans set for their first meet of the year in January 2021. After a very different fall semester with no competition aside from one intrasquad meet, the season will now begin next month and run through mid-April, a stark change from the usual September through February format. Due to limited existing seating at the Donaghey Aquatic Center, no fans will be allowed at home meets this season, but all home events will be live streamed.
"As the world changes week to week, we are hopeful to begin our season with some strong competition this January in order to help get us ready for conference meets February through April," said Coach Burgess. "Not competing this fall was surprisingly more challenging than expected, but we could not be more proud of how the team came together to push and be there for each other day in and out."
The Trojans will open the slate with three nonconference meets in a row, beginning with a dual at North Texas on Jan. 8. Little Rock's first home meet will be against Arkansas on Jan. 16, notably the first time that the Razorbacks have ever competed at the Donaghey Aquatic Center. The month will wrap up with a home tri-meet as the Trojans welcome Ouachita Baptist and Williams Baptist on Jan. 30.
Conference competition will begin in February, with a meet at reigning Missouri Valley Conference champions Missouri State on the 13th. The last regular season away meet for Little Rock is set for March 12 at Southern Illinois, with Valparaiso also joining for a tri-meet. The last home meet of the year is scheduled for March 27, which will be a virtual meet against Illinois State.
The Trojans will travel to Carbondale, Ill. for the Missouri Valley Conference Championships in April, with the championship meet taking place from the 14th through the 16th. Last season, Little Rock finished seventh out of eight teams, but with the addition of 12 new freshmen and an increase in roster size from 22 to 34 members in just the past two years, the Trojans should be prepared to move up in the conference standings.
"This is a special group that is looking to turn heads and take our program to new heights," added Coach Burgess. "They have been very fluid with the many changes that have occurred these past several months, and we have full confidence that their hard work and dedication is going to shine this season. With a strong, young team, we are ready to see a lot of our experienced upperclassmen leading the charge for them to make their mark this year."Â
