LITTLE ROCK – On Saturday, February 29, Little Rock's men's basketball team will host Louisiana at 2 p.m. at the Jack Stephens Center. Prior to the game against the Ragin' Cajuns, a special recognition will take place pregame.
The Trojans will honor Sergeant Major John L. Canley, Arkansas' own Medal of Honor recipient. A special reception will be held a 1 p.m. prior to the game on Derek Fisher Court, hosted by UA Little Rock and the Trojan Athletic Department. Arkansas Governor Asa Hutchinson, Lieutenant Governor Tim Griffin and Representative French Hill will be on hand during the reception as well as during a special recognition during the game.
Sergeant Major (Retired) John L. Canley was born in Caledonia and enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in Little Rock. In 1970, he was awarded the Navy Cross, the nation's second-highest medal of valor, for his actions during the Battle of Hue City in February 1968, one of the longest and bloodiest battles of the Vietnam War. On October 17, 2018, Canley was awarded the Medal of Honor for conspicuous gallantry.
Sergeant Major Canley retired from the United States Marine Corps October 23, 1981, and currently resides in Oxnard, California.
Veterans and military personnel are invited to the both the game and pregame reception free of charge. All active duty and retired military personnel will receive two complimentary tickets at the Trojan ticket window on the day of the game with their military ID.
