NEW ORLEANS – Little Rock sprinter
Cameron Jackson made history Friday as he was named the Sun Belt Conference's Freshman of the Year for the 2021 indoor season as the league announced its postseason awards.
Â
This marks the first time a Little Rock athlete has ever claimed the Sun Belt's Freshman of the Year honor. In addition, the Trojans received six all-conference honors, the most the program has received since 2011.
Â
Jackson led the way with Freshman of the Year accolades and a First Team All-Sun Belt award after winning the 60m dash at the conference championship meet on Tuesday, running 6.75. He led the field in the prelims as well with a time of 6.72 that ranks third-best in school history. Jackson was just the second Little Rock sprinter to ever win the 60m dash at the Sun Belt Indoor Championships, following Keshawn Andrews in 2019, although Leo Settle (1998) and Chris Johnson (2005) claimed 55m dash wins.
Â
His prelims time of 6.72 currently ranks Jackson tied for 34
th in the nation and in the conversation for a national championship appearance.
Â
Jonathan Jones received Second Team All-Sun Belt honors after his high jump mark of 6-11 (2.11m) awarded him the silver medal at the conference championship meet. His previous school record-breaking jump of 7-1 (2.16m) ranks him tied for 14
th nationally and likely to receive a national championship invitation.
Â
The 4x400m relay squad of
Phillip Anderson, Ricardo Banks,
Colby Swecker and
Jalen Black all received Third Team All-Sun Belt honors after their time of 3:17.54 put a bronze medal around their necks. That mark ranks as the sixth-best relay time in school history.
Â
Little Rock now awaits final declarations for the NCAA Indoor Championships. The national championship meet is set for Mar. 11-13 in Fayetteville, Ark.
