Trojans Fall to Golden Eagles in Hattiesburg, 2-0

Southern Miss scores twice in a seven minute span

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – A goal late in the first half and another early in the second, spanning seven minutes of game time, proved to be the difference in a 2-0 Little Rock loss to Southern Miss Friday at the Southern Miss Soccer Complex. The loss drops the Trojans to 1-2-1 on the season.

Little Rock was outshot on the afternoon 12-8, including a 9-6 disadvantage in shots on goal. Bergros Asgeirsdottir led the Trojans with three total shots, including a pair on goal. Five other Trojans tallied shots against the Golden Eagles with Julia Edholm, Jana Heinen, Abbie Smith and Allison Morrison each putting a shot on goal.

Defensively, goalkeeper Saskia Wagner played all 90 minutes for Little Rock, tallying six saves while allowing just the pair of goals.

Little Rock had the first opportunity of the match off Morrison's shot on goal in the 14th, followed by an attempt by Asgeirsdottir in the 24th minute. After the Golden Eagle goal in the 40th minute, the Trojans had a chance in the waning seconds of the first half behind a shot on goal by Smith as the first half expired.

Leading 1-0 at intermission, Southern Miss jumped out quickly in the second half, netting its second goal of the game just 1:57 into the second half and upping its lead to 2-0 in the 47th minute.

The Trojan offensive attack came on strong in the latter part of the second half, registering five of the final nine shots of the contest, but were unable to beat Southern Miss goalkeeper Alex Helbling, who earned the shutout with six saves.

Little Rock will now have a week off before returning to action after its scheduled game Sunday at Southeastern Louisiana was postponed due to the effects of Hurricane Ida in the lower Louisiana area. The Trojans will take to the field next Friday, September 10, when they travel to Grambling for a 6 p.m. kickoff.
