ST. CHARLES, Mo. – True freshman
Brennan Van Hoecke had a perfect day at the Lindenwood Open today while six other Little Rock wrestlers only dropped one match as a crop of tough Trojans continue to gain experience in collegiate tournaments. Van Hoecke racked three pins, one major decision, and one decision as he stormed through his bracket at 141 pounds, adding five wins to his resume. Final results from the Lindenwood Open can be found on TrackWrestling.
"Brennan made a strong statement for the second weekend in a row," noted assistant coach
Albert White on the freshman's sharp first two appearances as a Trojan. "He had a competitive performance at the Tiger Style Tournament (finishing second overall) and then came here this weekend and put up bonus points in every match except one. He wrestled well, really determined and dominant."
Little Rock posted second-place finishes from
Cael Keck,
Matthew Weinert, and
Apollo Gothard. Keck tallied three solid wins in a row at 133 pounds, beginning with a fall in less than 40 seconds into the match, before bowing out in the final. At 197 pounds, Weinert added four commanding wins to his belt, including two pins, before falling in the final match. In the loaded heavyweight bracket, Gothard charged through three matches before winning in overtime by decision to move ahead. His championships match was pushed into overtime once more, but the result did not go his way the second time around.
Trojan wrestlers registered 42 total victories, including Van Hoecke's five, with help from four each from
Bilal Bailey,
Reid Nelson, and
KJ Miley. Bailey demonstrated a breakthrough performance in the tournament, finishing third in his division at 157 pounds. He collected three decisions and one major decision, only being stopped once by a Mizzou wrestler halfway through. Nelson took fourth in the 125 pound bracket with a pair of decisions, a major decision, and a fall. At 285 pounds, Miley finished fourth in his bracket, claiming two pins and two decisions before an Iowa opponent ended his run.
Jake Adams and
Chase Tebbets were the final Trojans to only lose one match, both competing at 149 pounds. Tebbets wrestled through the consolation bracket after dropping his first match, ending his day with a pin over a Mizzou opponent. Adams claimed two decisions and one major decision before he was edged by one point in his last bout to conclude his run.
"The freshmen and sophomore guys got going early and continued that throughout the day," added Coach White about the young team's performances today. "In the open division we started slow, but picked it up as the day went on."
"We placed a lot of guys while competing against some tough guys and I think we stepped up to the challenge. We've got some things to work on, but we held our own. We've just got to continue choosing to do the harder thing more often in matches for a longer period of time. It changes our mentality and how we wrestle."
Little Rock returns to action in two weeks at the Cougar Clash on Sunday, December 4, traveling to Edwardsville, Illinois for another full day of wrestling at the SIUE-hosted tournament.
