RUSTON, La. – Little Rock couldn't overcome an early deficit and didn't take advantage of leadoff hits as the Trojans dropped a 10-0 decision to Louisiana Tech in front of 2,186 fans at the new J.C. Love Field in Ruston Tuesday evening.
Â
The game, which marked Little Rock's first trip to Ruston since the 2019 tornado destroyed the previous J.C. Love Field, saw the Bulldogs (26-11) strike with a groundout RBI in the first followed by a three-run double in the second to jump out to an early lead.
Â
Little Rock (16-16) had its chances early, failing to capitalize on leadoff hits by
Tyler Williams in the first and third innings. Williams was responsible for two of Little Rock's three hits in the ballgame while also drawing a walk.
Â
The Trojans' best chance to cut into Louisiana Tech's lead came in the fifth inning. Still trailing 4-0, Eldridge Figueroa and Williams drew back-to-back walks to start the frame before a strikeout stopped the momentum. Then
Canyon McWilliams hit a line drive to left center with a chance to plate a run but a diving catch by Tech's Adarius Myers followed by a quick relay back to the infield provided a double play and ended the threat.
Â
Louisiana Tech would strike again in the sixth with another bases clearing double to score three more runs with an RBI single in the seventh adding one more. In the eighth, a wild pitch by
Preston Davis followed by a passed ball by
Jake Wright allowed two Tech runs to score on consecutive pitches, pushing the score to 10-0.
Â
Hoss Brewer (2-1) was charged with the loss after allowing four runs on four hits in 1.2 innings on the mound. The Trojans used eight pitchers in all in the staff day, with
Sawyer Smallwood not allowing a run on four hits in 2.1 innings as he faced 11 batters.
Â
LA Tech's Greg Martinez was credited with the win after holding Little Rock scoreless on three hits over seven innings, walking two and striking out eight.
Â
The Trojans return to action on Friday, April 22 when Little Rock plays at No. 17 Texas State as the two teams begin a three-game Sun Belt series with all three games airing live on ESPN+.
