LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – Little Rock had a crop of newcomers lead the Trojans as the 2022 cross country season got underway Thursday evening at the Little Rock Invitational.
Zach McPhee, a junior college All-American that joined the Little Rock program this year, clocked 15:56.5 in the 5,000m race for an overall runner-up finish as he led the Trojan men while a trio of newcomers led the women in the season-opening race.
On the women's side it was freshman
Kyla Lochtefeld with a fifth-place finish to pace Little Rock while
Matilda Horton placed sixth and
Brooke Walker finished 10
th. The men's team finished second in the meet, scoring 40 points, while the women's 54 points was good enough for third.
McPhee's time was just 10 seconds shy of the leader but paced the Trojans.
Spencer Cardinal ran 16:05.8 to finish fourth overall while
Andrew Payton clocked 16:07.9 to place fifth.
Lochtefeld ran 19:34.9 in her first collegiate race for a top-five finish while Horton, who came to the United States from England, ran 19:47.3.
Brooke Walker, running 20:02.8, posted a top-10 finish in her first collegiate race.
Little Rock will now turn its attention to the UCA XC Challenge, set for Sept. 10 in Conway. That meet is the designated meet for both teams to earn points in the Governor's I-40 Showdown presented by Arkansas Blue Cross Blue Shield.
