MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Daria Burrows recorded a career-high 15 kills and hit a personal-best .464 as Little Rock recorded a 3-1 win over Arkansas-Pine Bluff in the Bluff City Showdown in Memphis Friday afternoon.
A senior transfer from Radford, it marked the first time Burrows has put down double-digit kills in her career and she was one of three Trojans (3-8) to reach double figures in the match. More than just a career-high tally in kills, Burrows recorded back-to-back kills at the 27-27 mark in the fourth set to clinch the match victory for Little Rock. Set scores were 25-23, 23-25, 25-12 and 29-27.
Jeila Fullerton, a sophomore transfer from Mississippi Valley State, added a season-high 12 kills and Daedrianna Cail used a hometown crowd in a career-high 10-kill performance. Cail, a true freshman that also had two service aces, hails from a town less than 20 miles from the University of Memphis campus.
Arkansas-Pine Bluff (2-10) was limited to a .033 hitting percentage as a team as Little Rock recorded a season-high 75 digs and had a 7-6 advantage in total blocks in the match.
Zanobia Willis came alive in the match with nine kills, five total blocks and a season-high .389 hitting percentage. Of her nine kills, two clinched set wins and five came after the 20-point threshold.
A trio of freshmen tallied season-best marks as
Gabrielle Spankus had 34 assists,
Rylee McClintock registered nine digs – including laying out for a dig that led to match point – and
Makaila Harris recorded a career-best 20 digs.
Despite the career highs, the Trojans were not without their faults. Little Rock hit just .181 as a team and committed 19 service errors, eight of which occurred in a frightful first set that saw UAPB come one point away from set point. The Trojans dropped the second set and, after a dominating 25-12 third set, needed extra points to clinch the match in a 29-27 fourth set that witnessed 12 ties and six lead changes.
The Golden Lions were led by the nine kills off the hands of both Laila Forston and Fernanda Spengler while Breana August had 19 digs.
Little Rock wraps up action in the Bluff City Showdown on Saturday at Noon when the Trojans face host Memphis. The Tigers (8-3) have won four straight matches going into Friday night's match against Central Arkansas.
