Kyra Apodaca Earns MVC Diver of the Week Award

Apodaca's NCAA Zone cut merits conference recognition

ST. LOUIS, MO. – Little Rock swimming and diving has collected another weekly league award this season, following the dominant performance that Kyra Apodaca showed on the boards last weekend to collect her first accolade as a Trojan. View the full Missouri Valley Conference announcement here.

Apodaca, a junior from Sugar Land, Texas, earned her first-ever Division I NCAA Zone cut this past weekend on the 1-meter board, scoring 268.10 points to become the program's first NCAA Zone qualifier since 2017. She won both boards, adding another first place finish on the 3-meter board with 259.65 points. Apodaca was dominant with her wins as well, winning the 1-meter by almost 60 points and scoring more than 20 over the next competitor on the 3-meter. Her efforts helped the Trojans sweep both St. Louis and Henderson State.

The NCAA Zone Diving Championships is a postseason competition for divers across the country in a final effort to secure a spot at the NCAA Championships, broken up into five different locations around the country. Apodaca made the cut by three points and will have the opportunity to compete at Zone D at the University of Houston from March 11-13.

Apodaca's honor is also the first conference Diver of the Week award earned by a Trojan diver since 2017, showcasing the program's recent efforts to rebuild and amplify the diving team.

This marks the third weekly Missouri Valley Conference accolade earned by Little Rock this year, as earlier this season Jaelle Carlson and Olivia Elgin earned Swimmer of the Week and Freshman of the Week awards, respectively. This has marked the fifth year in a row that the program has garnered a weekly conference award.

Kyra Apodaca and the Little Rock swimming and diving team will be back in action next week, as the Trojans head to the legendary IU Natatorium on the campus of IUPUI in Indianapolis for their annual mid-season invitational. The House of Champions Invite runs from Thursday, November 16 through Saturday, November 18 and will be a chance for Little Rock to put up some fast times and high scores that may end up as seed times ahead of the MVC Championships in February.
