NATCHITOCHES, La.  – Little Rock was unable to overcome an early deficit and ultimately fell to Northwestern State by a score of 4-9 on Friday night at Brown-Stroud Field. The loss drops the Trojans record to 9-6 on the season, game two of the series will be Saturday with a 2 p.m. first pitch.
Â
The Demons were able to get on top early with a leadoff homerun and would go on to add an additional run in the frame before Little Rock was able to get off of the field. NSU would continue to pull ahead, doubling their lead in the bottom of the second with another two runs, going up 4-0 heading into the third.
Â
The Trojan offense was held in check by NSU starter Cal Carver through the first five innings, only getting four runners on base during that time. Little Rock was finally able to get on the board in the top of the sixth inning with a two run homerun off the bat of
Skyler Trevino, cutting the Northwestern State lead to three at a score of 5-2.
Â
NSU would be able to get these runs back in the bottom of the inning with a two out single by Jeffrey Elkins that scored a pair and stretched the difference back to five. Again, the Trojans would battle back in the top of the seventh when
Noah Brewer picked up an RBI with a groundout that scored
Tyler Williams.
Â
Northwestern State would strike for the last time in the bottom of the seventh, getting two runs in the inning for the fourth time in the game and expanding the lead to six runs. Aidan Garret would lead off the ninth with a solo homer to right field, the first homerun of his career, but it was too little too late as the Trojans were unable to mount a miraculous comeback.
Â
Free passes hurt the Little Rock effort as the Trojans walked 15 batters in the game and were fortunate to strand 15 Demon baserunners in the contest.
Â
Luke Pectol was the sole Trojan to collect multiple hits on the night with a 2-for-5 performance with two singles.
Â
Nico Baumbach showed great patience at the dish, walking in three of his five plate appearances, he also scored once.
Â
Trevino continued to show his power as he hit his sixth homerun of the year in a 1-for-3 game. He got Little Rock on the board in the sixth with an opposite field blast that brought home two runs.
Â
The Trojans will try to even up the series on Saturday at 2 p.m. in game two of the three game set.
Jackson Wells will get the start for Little Rock and he will be facing off against Alex Makarewich for Northwestern State.
