CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – The Trojans were able to fight back from an early deficit, but ultimately fell to Southeast Missouri by a score of 17-6 in eight innings in Sunday's finale in Cape Girardeau. The loss drops Little Rock to 13-11 on the season to go along with an OVC record of 3-3 through the first two series.
Â
SEMO got out to a hot start, scoring six runs in the first three innings to jump out to a sizable 6-0 lead while Little Rock struggled to get going with the only bright spot being base hits from
Tyler Williams in each of his first two at bats.
Â
The fourth and fifth innings were quiet for both sides as the Trojans turned an inning ending double play in each. The first was a lineout to right field and throw to first base while the second was a bit more traditional, coming in the form of a 6-4-3 ground ball.
Â
Little Rock's offense showed its ability to battle back in the top of the sixth inning which began with a leadoff walk by
Christian Bernabe and a single off the bat of
Ben Harmon. Sophomore
Alex Seguine then cut the deficit in half with one swing of the bat, sending a 1-1 pitch sailing over the left field fence for his first homerun in a Little Rock uniform. This was followed up with Williams third hit of the day, an opposite field blast that cleared the wall and brought the game within two runs at 6-4.
Â
Chance Vaught was able to hold the SEMO offense in check in the bottom of the sixth, striking out two to get Little Rock back in the dugout.
Â
The Redhawks were able to load the bases with no outs in the bottom of the seventh before slugging a bases clearing double into the right-center field gap. SEMO would get four more runs in the inning and stretch the lead to nine with another double and homerun.
Â
Nico Baumbach and
Ty Rhoades would hit back to back homeruns for the Trojans yet again in the eighth inning, both solo shots with two outs, to close the deficit slightly. However, the Redhawks kept things firing on all cylinders in the bottom half of the inning, striking for four runs and ending the competition with a double to left field that scored a pair of runs and triggered the 10 run rule.
Â
Despite the lopsided final score, four Trojans were able to leave the yard today as homeruns accounted for all of the Little Rock runs batted in.
Â
Williams continued to swing a hot bat in a 3-for-4 game that saw him hit his second homer in as many days. The senior outfielder collected seven hits on the weekend with four of them going for extra bases, hitting for the cycle between the two games played on Saturday.
Â
Seguine led the Trojans in RBI on the day with three, all of which came on his homerun in the sixth inning.
Â
Baumbach was one of two Trojans to collect multiple hits in the game with a 2-for-4 performance that included his ninth homer on the year.
Â
Little Rock will now look forward to a midweek matchup against a former Sun Belt opponent in the University of Louisiana Monroe. The Trojans will travel to Monroe on Tuesday for a 4 p.m. game before beginning a weekend series back at Gary Hogan Field against UT Martin on Thursday.
