MARION, Ill. – The Trojans 2023 season has come to an end. Little Rock was defeated in a pair of games on Friday beginning with a 3-2 loss to Morehead State before dropping game two of the day to Eastern Illinois by a final of 5-1, eliminating the Trojans from the OVC Baseball Championship.
Â
Game one was a pitcher's duel through and through, the Trojans fell behind early when MSU scored a run in the bottom of the first inning on a groundball with a runner on third and less than two outs.
Â
The Eagles would add another run to double up the lead in the fifth inning, scoring on a single down the right field line that ricocheted off of the padding along the foul line and allowed a runner to score from first base.
Â
Little Rock was finally able to break through in the top of the eighth, with two outs and the bases loaded senior
Jake Wright slapped a single through the left side that allowed
Skyler Trevino and
Nico Baumbach to cross the plate and even the game up at two.
Â
Unfortunately, Morehead State was able to walk off the Trojans in the bottom of the ninth on a single to right-center with a runner on second base and two outs, forcing the Trojans into a win or go home matchup against Eastern Illinois.
Â
Game two started out roughly for the Trojans as three Panthers crossed the plate in the top of the first inning, further damage was avoided however as at one point when two runs had already crossed the plate EIU had already scored twice.
Â
Little Rock scored its only run of the game in the bottom of the second inning when
Ty Rhoades singled with two outs to plate
Skyler Trevino, who had doubled to lead off the inning.
Â
Eastern Illinois would add two unearned runs, one in the third and one in the eighth to make the score 5-1, the same as the final.
Â
The Trojans will be able to look back on their inaugural season in the OVC with good memories and a drive for future seasons. The team won 30 games for the first time since 2003, defeated a power five in-state rival in #5 Arkansas, swept another in-state rival in Central Arkansas and took home the I-40 Governor's Showdown for the university and placed second in the conference that had them tabbed to finish fourth at the beginning of the year. Little Rock also took home the most First Team All-OVC honors of any school and
Jackson Wells was named the pitcher of the year in his first season in Division I baseball.
Â
Little Rock has a bright future with a young team that has no players who are out of eligibility at the end of the 2023 season.
