Weekly awards for junior libero
Andrea Roman have become like a favorite song – just put it on repeat. Roman picked up her fifth Defensive Player of the Week honor from the Ohio Valley Conference on Monday, after a series during which she averaged 7.6 digs per set and helped Little Rock to a pivotal road sweep of Western Illinois.
"I'm honored to be recognized for the fifth time this season. I'm proud of the work we've been putting in as a team, and I'm eager to keep building on it," Roman said. "My teammates and coaches push me to be better every day. I'm excited to keep improving as an individual and as a collective."
Roman – one of the top liberos in the nation – totaled 35 digs during Friday's 3-1 win at WIU, averaging almost nine digs per set. She ranks fourth nationally in digs per set and ninth in total digs, while leading the conference in both categories. Her hustle on defense has helped the Trojans rank second nationally in digs per set as a team and ninth in total digs.
"Andrea was a big part of us being able to win the two matches on the road," head coach
Van Compton said. "In the second match, she averaged nine digs per set, which is almost double what you expect a great libero to average. I am so proud of her for stepping up her game."
Roman is on her way to establishing a new Little Rock record for career digs. Currently with 1,466 for her career, she needs just 160 more to set the all-time mark, held by Emily Pepperman (2009-12). Last Friday's match put her past Sydnee Martin for second on the school's career list.
