Trojans Show Progress During Hard-Fought Loss to No. 11 Minnesota

Late takedowns, missed pins the difference in final result

MEQUON, Wisc. — Little Rock picked up wins from its two veteran wrestlers — along with a ranked upset — before falling 23-9 to Minnesota during FloWrestling Night in America, hosted by Homestead High School.

The No. 14 Trojans were led by Matty Bianchi and Stephen Little, who each delivered dominant individual performances. Jaivon Jones added a key ranked win to get Little Rock on the scoreboard against the No. 11 Gophers.

"It was a tough night, and we lost the one-takedown matches with several chances to pin to win. But overall, significantly better this dual than the previous," head coach Neil Erisman said. "I'm not OK with our loss tonight, but we are much improved. I believe we will continue to get better and be a much better team in a couple months."

Minnesota claimed the first four bouts — all by decision — to build a 12-0 lead. In each of those matches, the Trojans remained within reach but gave up decisive third-period takedowns that allowed the Gophers to secure team points. Those narrow margins proved to be the difference in a tightly contested dual between two ranked programs.

Jones, ranked No. 25 at 157 pounds by FloWrestling, earned a sudden-victory takedown over No. 21 Charlie Millard to spark the Trojans. No. 6 Bianchi (165) followed with a 5-1 win, and No. 3 Little (197) added a 7-2 decision. Both Bianchi and Little remain unbeaten this season.

Little Rock stays busy this weekend, splitting the roster between two Sunday events. The Trojans will host Indiana at 12:30 p.m., while the remainder of the squad competes at the Cougar Clash, hosted by SIUE.

The Trojans will close out the calendar year at the annual Collegiate Duals in Nashville, Tenn., where they will face No. 3 Ohio State and Cornell on Dec. 21.
