Shane McClung, a longtime lover of the game of golf and innovator of its basic techniques is in his second year as head men’s golf coach at UALR, his alma mater. Acquiring the head coaching position was no huge stretch for McClung considering his impressive credentials and lengthy employment history within some of golf’s most prestigious regional communities. He has worked as the assistant golf professional at numerous courses, including: The First Tee of Central Arkansas, Indian Hills Country Club in Fairfield Bay, Ark., and Diamondhead Country Club in Hot Springs.
At the Country Club of Arkansas, McClung doubled his responsibilities by serving as the assistant golf professional as well as the tournament coordinator. Such experiences paved the way for him to ultimately land the position as the head golf professional at Castlewoods Golf Club in Jackson Miss., which was designed by the golfing legend Jack Nicklaus. Before taking over as head coach at UALR, McClung served as the assistant golf coach for two seasons under Wyn Norwood, who is one of the most respected golf coaches in the nation.
In addition to his extensive golfing career, McClung also served in the United States Navy as an operation specialist aboard the USS John F. Kennedy. Shortly thereafter he began attending UALR, where he graduated in 2005 with a B.S. degree in health sciences with an emphasis in exercise science.
