Freddy Delgado

  • Title
    Head Coach

Entering his fifth season with the UALR soccer program in 2012, head coach Freddy Delgado has spent the last four seasons shaping Trojan soccer into one of the most respected programs in the Sun Belt Conference. In addition to qualifying for the SBC Tournament in his first two seasons at the helm, Delgado has guided UALR to unprecedented academic success, as the Trojans have been recognized by the NSCAA for achieving a team GPA of 3.0 or above following each of the past three academic years.

Despite missing the Sun Belt Tournament for the second-straight season, the 2011 Trojans improved defensively and fielded a more balanced offensive attack that left them a game out of the season-ending conference tournament. UALR's 2011 season got off to a strong start, topping Missouri State at Burns Park for the first time in the program's history. A pair of wins against ULM and Louisiana-Lafayette in early October put UALR at the .500 mark in conference play with three weeks left in the regular season. But UALR was unable to maintain the momentum, dropping five straight to end the season, as injuries piled up and the Trojans' difficulty winning matches away from Little Rock caught up with them.

The 2010 Trojans, who finished the year with a 7-12-1 record, narrowly missed qualifying for the Sun Belt Tournament for what would have been the fifth-straight year. UALR finished the 2010 campaign playing its best soccer of the year against some of the best teams in the Sun Belt Conference. In their final three matches, the Trojans played second-place North Texas to a 1-1 tie, lost a heartbreaker in overtime to league-leading Denver and ended the season with a 2-1 win in double overtime to in-state rival Arkansas State.

Individually, the 2010 season saw Jane Picarelli break both the UALR and the Sun Belt record for saves in a career, as the North Richland Hills, Texas, native ended her four years in a Trojans uniform with 480 career saves. It also saw unprecedented exposure for Christina Veasley, as the Alamogordo, N.M., native entered the season as the Sun Belt Conference Preseason Player of the Year and spent the majority of the season ranked amongst the top-100 players in the country, according to TopDrawerSoccer.com.

Delgado and the Trojans made history in his second season at UALR in 2009, guiding the Trojans to the program's first appearance in the Sun Belt Conference Tournament championship game. The 2009 Trojans also made Sun Belt Tournament history by becoming the first No. 8-seed to knock off a No. 1-seed, scoring a 1-0 overtime victory against Florida International on Nov. 4, 2009.

UALR followed up its victory over top-seeded FIU by defeating North Texas, 1-0, the following day to earn its first-ever trip to the Sun Belt Tournament championship game, before suffering a 1-0 loss to Denver in the title match.

As a sophomore, Veasley became the first player in school history to earn First Team All-Sun Belt Conference and NSCAA All-South Region accolades during the 2009 season. The Alamogordo, N.M., native tied for the Sun Belt lead with 12 goals and led the SBC with five game winners. In conference-only games, Veasley led the Sun Belt with 18 points and eight goals.

Veasley was one of four Trojans named to the Sun Belt's All-Tournament Team in 2009, along with defenders Jacquelyn Paz and Kamiya Merrick, and Picarelli at goalkeeper. A native of North Richland Hills, Texas, Picarelli recorded two shutouts during the 2009 SBC Tournament and allowed just one goal over UALR's three matches.

In his first season at UALR, Delgado led the team to its third-consecutive berth in the Sun Belt Tournament. He compiled an overall record of 8-11-2 and a 4-6-1 mark in Sun Belt play. Delgado earned his first career victory on Aug. 29, 2008 as the Trojans defeated SEC member Mississippi State, 2-1, in overtime.

Delgado enters his fifth season at UALR in 2012 and is 31-48-4 in three years as head coach of the Trojans and sports a 14-27-3 record in league play.

Delgado was named UALR head women's soccer coach on April 15, 2008, bringing with him seven years of coaching experience in the Sun Belt Conference. He came to UALR after seven seasons as an assistant coach at the University of Louisiana at Monroe.

Delgado joined the ULM program in 2001 and was an integral part of the Warhawks' success and growth before his departure. During his time at ULM, Delgado's guidance helped produce 26 All-Conference selections, four Academic All-Americans and a school-record 14-6-2 season in 2004.

Working alongside ULM head coach Stacy Lamb, Delgado served as the team's primary coach during team practices and conditioning, as well as the program's recruiting coordinator. His disciplined approach to technique and emphasis on defense helped ULM place seven defenders on All-Conference teams during his tenure.

A standout at Regis University from 1993-97, Delgado began his coaching career at his alma mater, where in four years as an assistant coach (1997-2001) he helped guide the women's program to the 1999 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference regular-season championship and a conference tournament title in 2000. During his time at Regis, Delgado also served on staff of the Colorado Olympic Development Program from 1997-2001.

Delgado gained additional experience as the head coach of the Colorado Rush U-16 boys team from 1999-2001, and served as the club director of the NELSA Soccer Association from 2001-2008. In 2005, Delgado received his United States Soccer Federation "A" license, the highest certification offered for collegiate soccer coaches.
