LITTLE ROCK, Ark.?The University of Arkansas-Little Rock swim team opened the 2005-06 season with a win against Hendrix College 73-48 at the Donaghey Aquatic Center Friday. The Trojans won seven single events and both relay events.
“It was a great first opener,” said head coach Richard Turner. “Associate coach Paul Blair did a great job training and preparing the team. They were excited, prepared, and focused. Everybody had a great race and swam extremely well.”
The 200 yard medley relay team of seniors Eimear Ryan and Mary Emmons, junior Kellie LaMonica, and sophomore Susana Villalba won the first event in a time of 2:07.80.
The tone of the meet was set in the second event of the meet, when freshman Chelsea Churchill won the 1,000 yard freestyle in a time of 11:23.91 against one of Hendrix's best swimmers.
“It set the tone for the race,” said Turner. “Everybody got excited.”
Junior Danielle Horack won the 200 yard freestyle in a time of 2:05.59 beating her competition by over eight seconds. She also won the 100 yard butterfly in a time of 1:03.50.
Emmons finished first in the 200 yard individual medley in a time of 2:21.87 which was 20 seconds faster than her personal best last season. She also won the 100 yard breastroke in 1:12.42.
LaMonica placed first in the 100 yard freestyle in 1:03.16, while Ryan won the 100 yard backstroke in 1:08.40.
The 200 yard freestyle relay team of Churchill, LaMonica, Villalba, and Horack finished the meet with a first place finish in a time of 1:52.38.
Arkansas-Little Rock continues their season next weekend in Conway, Ark. at the Hendrix Classic and Hendrix Relays.
