Last Second Shots Lift Louisiana-Monroe Over UALR 56-53

LITTLE ROCK, Ark.?The University of Arkansas-Little Rock's four game home winning streak was snapped as last second shots lifted the University of Louisiana-Monroe over the Trojans 56-53 at the Jack Stephens Center Sunday.  UALR (7-3) led by eight with 6:03 remaining.

 

The Trojans shot 44 percent for the game and out rebounded the Lady Indians 37 to 30 but committed 20 turnovers.

 

“We let them shoot a couple of wide open threes,” said head coach Joe Foley.  “We made some costly turnovers and had Renee and Heather in foul trouble.  We are a good team and a good team to watch, but we are not mentally tough.”

 

Jocelyn Love led the team in points knocking down 16 going 6 of 15 from the field.

 

Renee Renz scored her third straight double-double with 12 points and a game high of 11 rebounds, while Jessica Brown knocked down nine points and brought down six boards.

 

Heather Morris contributed seven points and seven rebounds and led the team in assists with eight and steals with three.

 

Ashley Johnson recorded seven points and five boards.

 

For ULM, Aishie Banks led all scorers with 18 points, while April O'Neal knocked in 10.

 

In the first half, the Lady Indians started with a 6-0 run until Love knocked down a three-pointer with 15:53 on the clock.

 

The Trojans kept within reach tying the score twice and taking the lead for the first time on a layup by Love with 6:56 until the half.

 

At the 4:28 mark, ULM scored six unanswered points on free throws to spread their lead to six.

 

The Lady Indians led by as many as nine points, but the Trojans scored on free throws by Brown and Johnson to go into the locker room down by six.

 

After both teams exchanged baskets for the start of the second half, the Trojans knocked down 10 consecutive points to take the lead for only the second time in the game. 

 

UALR expanded their lead to eight with 6:03 remaining on a jumper by Andrea Keys.

Louisiana-Monroe charged back with a layup and back-to-back three point shots cutting the lead to one.

 

Morris knocked down a three-point shot with 3:45 remaining to increase the Trojan's lead to four, but April O'Neal answered back with a three.

 

After a layup by Love, the Lady Indians made two jumpers to take the lead with 55 seconds remaining.

 

The Trojans missed a three-pointer and a jumper and committed a turnover allowing Melanie Williams to score a layup with 12 seconds remaining.

 

UALR missed a three-pointer at the end to lose their first home game this season.

 

Arkansas-Little Rock continues action at home on Wednesday against Southern Mississippi.  Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
