Trojans Narrowly Edge Mississippi Valley State in Overtime 46-44

ITA BENA, Miss.?Despite shooting 50 percent from the floor, the University of Arkansas-Little Rock women's basketball team committed 30 turnovers and narrowly edged Mississippi Valley State in overtime as the Trojans won 46-44. 

 

Heather Morris and Renee Renz led the team in scoring with 13 points a piece, while Andrea Keys contributed 11 points and a game high of nine rebounds.

 

In the first half, UALR connected on 8 of 19 shot for a 42.1 percent and limited Mississippi Valley State to 27.6 percent from the floor.  The Devilettes forced 11 Trojans turnovers and recorded six steals, while UALR forced six Devilette turnovers and recorded one steal.

 

The half started slow with the Trojans missing two straight three-pointers.

 

Mississippi Valley put the first points on the board with a jumper by

Ashley Robinson.

 

At the 18:21 mark, Renz knocked in UALR's first points bringing down the offensive rebound and putting up the jumper.

 

Love and Renz each scored on jumpers for the Trojans to expand the lead to four.

 

The Devilettes scored their second field goal at the 12:54 mark on a jumper by Portia Wilson.

 

UALR went on a four point run on jumpers by Tamara Humphrey and Renz, before Karmethia Mazique hit a layup but missed the free throw for the three point opportunity.

 

Renz successfully completed a three point play on the next possession to stretch the lead 13-6.

 

Both teams exchanged baskets, until the 3:31 mark when Love knocked in a three-pointer to give the Trojans their largest lead of the half at nine.

 

Two UALR turnovers allowed MVSU to score a layup and a three-pointer to narrow the lead 21-17 at the half.

 

After the Devilettes scored the first points of the second half, UALR quickly scored seven straight points on jumpers by Renz and Andrea Keys and a three by Morris.

 

With 15:40 remaining, Angela Howard scored a three-point play to narrow the lead 28-22.

 

Keys scored the next field goal bringing down a strong rebound before the layup.

 

Full court pressure by the Devilettes forced the turnover and allowed Portia Wilson to score.

 

The Trojans then went on a six point run with Keys knocking down four of the points.

 

After a MVSU basket, Morris completed a three-point play to stretch the lead 38-26 with 10:35 remaining.

 

The Trojans and the Devilettes recorded a total of five turnovers before Christen West knocked in a fade away jumper.

 

Mississippi Valley State's full court pressure held the Trojan offense forcing turnovers and capitalizing by knocking in points.

 

A layup by Vanesha Young cut the Trojan lead to four with 4:13 remaining.

 

After missed free throws by Morris and two made and two missed free throws by Wilson, the Trojans broke an eight minute non-scoring skid with two made shots at the charity stripe by Morris.

 

With 1:46 remaining, Young made a layup but missed her three point play opportunity to narrow the Trojan lead to two.

 

MVSU missed a three-point shot allowing UALR to regain possession, but the Trojan turned the ball over with 24.5 seconds on the clock.

 

Howard missed a jumper, brought down a rebound, and laid in two points to tie the score at 40 with 5.4 seconds remaining.

 

A last minute three point attempt by Love missed sending the game into overtime.

 

In the overtime period, Brown scored the first points at the 3:30 mark on a layup.

 

Morris knocked in a fade away jumper with 2:29 remaining to expand the Trojans lead to four.

 

Wilson scored the first Devilettes points on free throws with 1:44 left in the overtime.

 

MVSU capitalized on a UALR turnover with Mazique sinking a layup to tie the score at 44.

 

With 50.8 second left, Morris sunk a free throw to give the Trojans the one point edge.

 

Love made a free throw with 9.9 second left advancing UALR's lead by two.

 

West attempted a three right at the buzzer, but the shot narrowly missed the rim giving the Trojans the overtime win.
