Morris? Second Half Surge Not Enough for Trojans

MONROE, La.?Despite Heather Morris knocking down all 19 of her points in the second half, the University of Arkansas-Little Rock Trojans lost their second straight road contest to Louisiana-Monroe 65-56 in Monroe, La. Monday.  The Trojans (8-5) shot 37 percent for the game.

Morris led all scorers recording 7 of 18 from the floor, 2 of 8 from the arc, and 3 of 3 from the free throw line.

Jocelyn Love contributed 11 points and brough down six boards, while Ashley Johnson knocked down eight points.

Renee Renz led the team in rebounds with ten.

 

Both ULM and UALR shot 27 percent in the first half with the Trojans edging the Lady Indians in rebounds 20 to 14.

 

Love opened the half with a jumper, before Nedra Winston knocked in two free throws to tie the score.

 

UALR scored five unanswered points on jumpers by Johnson and Andrea Keys with assists from Morris.

 

At the 14:05 mark, Lottie Moore scored two points for the Lady Indians on a layup.

 

After a jumper by Johnson for UALR, Louisiana-Monroe scored six consecutive points to tie the score at 10.

 

The score remained tied until the 6:41 mark, when Melanie Williams hit a three-pointer to give the Lady Indians the 15-12 lead.

 

Love answered back with a three to tie the score, before LaJeanna Howard knocked down another ULM three for the 18-15 lead.

 

Both teams traded baskets and turnovers with the Lady Indians keeping the edge.

 

After two missed free throw opportunities for the Trojans, Renz knocked in one to cut ULM's lead to two with 1:10 on the clock.

 

Alicia Pantallion knocked in a free throw before the buzzer to give the Lady Indians the 21-18 half-time lead.

 

Michelle Biley opened the second half with a jumper followed by two steals and a layup by Howard to broaden the Lady Indians lead to 25-18.

 

Johnson knocked down back-to-back jumper to pull the Trojans within three at the 17:28 mark.

 

Both teams exchanged baskets, until 17 minutes remaining when Biley scored a jumper after Lady Indian block and steal.

 

After another ULM steal, Biley knocked in a layup but missed the three point opportunity.

 

Renz scored the first field goal in four minutes for UALR on a jumper assisted by Laura Throesch.

 

ULM scored six unanswered points before a jumper by Love at the 9:09 mark.

 

After two Lady Indian baskets, Love knocked in two free throws to cut the lead to 12.

 

Both team exchanged free throws before UALR went on a six point run on jumpers by Rachel Smith and Morris and a three-pointer by Morris.

 

Despite Morris scoring 14 points in the last four minutes, the Trojans could not overcome the Lady Indian offense to lose 65-56.

 

Arkansas-Little Rock starts conference action on Thursday as they face Florida International in Miami, Fla.  Tip-off is set for 4 p.m. central standard time.
