Box Score TROY, Ala.?Despite shooting 17.4 percent from the floor in the second half, UALR held on to defeat Troy 48-38 at Troy Arena Saturday. UALR improves to 10-4 overall and 3-1 in Sun Belt Conference action.
Nikya Hughes led all scorers with 13 points with 12 of those coming in the first half. Hughes also led the team with seven rebounds and knocked down two three-pointers.
Jocelyn Love contributed 11 points including three three-pointers, while Anshel Cooper and Kim Sitzmann led the team with four assists a piece.
After UALR won the opening tip, the Trojans went on a 5-0 run on a layup by Cooper and a three-pointer by Hughes.
At the 16:07 mark, Troy (8-5, 1-2 Sun Belt) put up their first points with a layup by Kylie Morrissy and a jumper by Lucy Lindley to cut the UALR lead to one.
Over the next two minutes, UALR out scored Troy 6-2 with three-pointers by Hughes and Love.
Troy cut the UALR lead to one with four straight points by Morrissy, before UALR knocked down seven straight points with five coming from Love for the 18-10 advantage at the 8:21 mark.
In the remaining seven minutes, UALR scored 12 points to Troy's seven for the 30-17 half-time lead.
UALR opened the second half with a steal by Sitzmann and a layup by Cooper and one to extend the Trojan lead to 33-17.
Over the next four minutes, Troy went on a 9-0 run to cut UALR's lead to 33-26 with 13:02 remaining.
At the 12:35 mark, Love knocked down a three-pointer followed by a free throw by Hughes to extend the UALR to 11.
After both teams exchanged baskets, Valensia Hairston knocked down a jumper followed by a jumper by Amy Lewis to cut UALR's lead to seven with 7:28 remaining.
Troy came within five points with 5:59 remaining on a jumper by Morrissy, but Sitzmann knocked down a three-pointer to advance the UALR lead to 42-34.
Over the next five minutes, Renee Renz went 6-of-6 from the foul line, while Troy recorded 2-of-5 from the line to expand the Trojan lead to 12.
A last second jumper by Morrissy of Troy gave the final UALR win of 48-38.
UALR continues conference action at the Jack Stephens Center on January 4 as they host North Texas. The double-header is slatted to begin at 5:15 p.m.
