UALR Wins First Road Contest This Season Over Southern Miss

HATTIESBURG, Miss.?The UALR women's basketball team shot 54.7 percent from the field and forced 27 Southern Miss turnovers to win their first road contest this season with a 70-49 victory.  The Trojans extend their series record lead to 3-1.

 

Four Trojans scored in double-digit figures with Kim Sitzmann knocking down 19 points.  Anshel Cooper recorded 13 points, while Jocelyn Love and Andrea Keys each knocked down 12.

 

Renee Renz, Sitzmann, and Keys led the Trojans with four rebounds.  

 

In the first half, both team shot over 50 percent with the Trojans (6-2) recording a 63 percent, and the Golden Eagles (3-6) knocking down 61.1 percent.  UALR also recorded an 83.3 three-point field goal percentage going 5-of-6.

 

UALR forced 15 first half turnovers for Southern Miss.

 

Southern Miss opened the first half with a 4-0 run on points by Lauren Pittman and Emer Foley.

 

A three-pointer by Renz put the first points on the board for the Trojans at the 17:26 mark.  After a jumper by the Golden Eagles, Sitzmann tied the score at six with a three-pointer.

 

At the 15:38 mark, UALR went on a five point run with a jumper by Sitzmann and a three-pointer by Love. 

 

After Foley knocked down a jumper for Southern Miss, the Trojans knocked down eight consecutive points including six by Sitzmann.

 

Over the next four minutes, UALR out scored the Golden Eagles 6-5 including threes by Love and Nikya Hughes for the 27-16 lead.

 

The Trojans extended their lead to 17 points on free throws by Love and back-to-back layups by Cooper.

 

In the last four and a half minutes of the half, both the Trojans and the Golden Eagles knocked down ten points, but UALR kept the lead going into half-time 43-26.

 

Free throws opened the second half with each team knocking down one.  Sitzmann then knocked down four straight points for the 48-27 lead.

 

Over the next four minutes, Foley scored all six of the Golden Eagles seven points, while Keys knocked down six of UALR's eight.

 

For Southern Miss, Foley knocked down all six of their points in the next three minutes, while the Trojans also knocked down six with a jumper by Hughes and back-to-back baskets by Cooper.

 

Over the remaining minutes, UALR scored eight points to hold on for the 70-49 win.

 

UALR continues non-conference action on Saturday in Jackson, Miss. as the Trojans face Jackson State.  Tip-off is set for 3 p.m. and can be heard on WB 101.1 FM with Phil Elson.
