UALR Loses to Jackson State 57-53

JACKSON, Miss.-The UALR women's basketball team committed 22 turnovers including 15 in the first half to lose 57-53 to Jackson State Saturday.  The Lady Tigers won their first contest over the Trojans.

 

Three Trojans scored in double-digits with Renee Renz leading the team with 16.  Jocelyn Love knocked down 11 points, while Anshel Cooper contributed 11.

 

Renz and Cooper each led the team with six rebounds.

 

For Jackson State, Shelita Burns knocked down 15 points and brought down seven boards.

 

After Jackson State won the tip, UALR put up the first points at the 18:23 mark on a layup by Renz from Sitzmann.

 

With the score 2-0 over the next four minutes, the Lady Tigers started an 8-0 run to take the lead at the 14:27 mark.

 

Love drained a three-pointer to edge UALR within three with 12:15 until the half, but the Lady Tigers knocked down eight straight points to extend their lead to 11.

 

Andrea Keys and Sitzmann knocked down back-to-back jumpers, but Jackson State answered back with four straight points.

 

Over the last four minutes until half, the Lady Tigers out scored the Trojans seven to six to hold the half-time lead 28-15.

 

Love opened the second half with two free-throws followed by a jumper by Hughes.

 

After a jumper by Burns for Jackson State, UALR out scored the Lady Tigers 13 to four to cut the JSU lead to 34-32.

 

Renz tied the score at the 13:35 mark with a jumper, but the Lady Tigers knocked down seven consecutive points to expand their lead to 41-31.

 

Both teams exchanged baskets, before Renz knocked in a jumper and one at the 8:20 mark to bring UALR within two.

 

Keys knocked down two free throws to tie the score at 43.  Both teams then knocked down free throws to keep the score tied at 45.

 

Shante Stanford knocked down a three to put their lead at 48-45.

 

After both team exchanged free throws, Renz scored on a layup to come within one 50-49.

 

Jackson State knocked down seven straight points including a three by Verenique Warren to regain their lead 56-49.

 

Love knocked down back-to-back baskets with second left, but Burns knocked down a free throw.  Jackson State held on for the 57-53 win.

 

UALR starts conference action on Wednesday as the travel to Louisiana-Monroe.  Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
