UALR Volleyball Begins Baylor Clarion Invitational with Split

WACO, Texas?The UALR volleyball team began the Labor Day weekend with a 3-1 loss (18-30, 25-30, 30-21, 20-30) to the University of Houston and a 3-1 win (30-16, 31-29, 28-30, 30-23) at the Baylor Clarion Invitational Friday. 

 

Over the two matches, Amila Barakovic averaged 2.88 kills and 2.50 digs, while Ivanka Davidova averaged 2.75 kills and 1.62 blocks.

 

Sanda Dzile averaged 7.38 set assists, 2.75 digs, and 1.25 blocks, while Ana Carolina Buccini lead the team averaging 5.62 digs.

 

In the first match, Barakovic recorded her fifth double-double of the season with a team high of 12 kills and 14 digs, while Davidova and Anita Bucur each knocked down 11 kills. 

 

Davidova also recorded a team high of seven block assists, while Buccini lead the Trojans with 21 digs.

 

In game one, Houston limited UALR to just eight kills while knocking down 19 for a .375 hitting percentage.

 

In game two, the Trojans had an early 2-1 lead with a kill by Dzile, but the Cougars scored three consecutive points to take the advantage.

 

UALR pushed points at the end, but Houston took the game 30-25.

 

In game three, the Trojans knocked down 12 kills, while forcing 13 Houston errors.

 

UALR took the early lead on an attack error and sustained the lead throughout the game.  The Trojans sealed the victory on a Cougar attack error.

 

Houston took the final game and the match knocking down 19 kills in game four.

 

After two ties, the Cougars started the game with seven consecutive points.

 

The Trojans fought back and tied the score at 10 on a kill by Bucur.

 

UALR tied the score twice, before Houston regained the lead on a Trojan attack error.

 

With the Trojans within one point, the Cougars rattled off ten straight points to take the 28-18 advantage.

 

An attack error by UALR allowed Houston to take the match.

 

In the second match of the day, UALR forced 43 ULM errors to take three of the four games for the win.

 

Barakovic and Davidova led the Trojans with 11 kills, while Buccini led UALR with 24 digs.

 

In game one, UALR forced 11 ULM errors in the 30-16 win.  The Trojans rattled off as many as seven consecutive points.

 

In game two, UALR fought back from a deficit to tie the score at 17.  The score would tie two more times before ULM knocked down three straight points for the 27-24 advantage.

 

A kill by Barakovic edged the Trojans closer, but ULM scored two more points to reach game point.

 

UALR rattled off six consecutive points including kills by Bucur and Davidova and a service ace by Barakovic for the 31-29 win.

 

The Trojans lost the next game 28-30 but knocked down 10 kills in game four and forced 13 ULM errors for the 30-23 win.

 

UALR continues action at the Baylor Clarion Invitational Saturday with a 12 p.m. match against New Mexico and a 7:30 p.m. match against host school Baylor.
