UALR Loses Opener 67-54 to Creighton

OMAHA, Neb.?Although the UALR women's basketball team cut the Creighton lead to three, the Trojans lost their opener 67-54 Saturday at the Omaha Civic Auditorium.  The Trojans shot 34.5 percent from the floor for the game, while Creighton recorded a 42.9 percentage.

 

Kim Sitzmann led all scorers with 23 points including three three-pointers, while Nikya Hughes knocked down six points and led the team in rebounds with seven.

 

Asriel Rolfe recorded a team high four assists, while Anshel Cooper scored eight points and recorded a team high of four steals.

 

In the first half, the Trojans shot 32 percent from the field and committed ten turnovers, while Creighton shot 44.8 percent from the floor and committed eight turnovers.

 

After UALR earned the tip, Sitzmann made one of two free throws at the 19:43 mark.

 

Over the next four and a half minutes, Creighton out scored the Trojans 6-0 to take the lead.

 

The Bluejays held the Trojans to just one point and extended their lead to 12 with two put backs by Kellie Nelson and a three-pointer by Tyrai Bronson.

 

UALR scored their first field goal of the game at the 13:27 as Sitzmann knocked down a layup and one to bring the score to 13-4.

 

After a Bluejay layup, Cooper scored two points on a layup and pass from Mattilyn McIntyre.

 

Over the next minute and a half, Creighton outscored the Trojans 7-2 to gain a 14 point lead.

 

UALR knocked down nine straight points including eight from Sitzmann to narrow the lead to five with 6:57 remaining in the half.

 

With 1:03 remaining, the Bluejays broadened their lead back to 12 on free throws by Sam Schuett.

 

UALR held Creighton to no points in the remaining minutes, while scoring four points on a layup by Cooper and free throw by McIntryre to go into halftime trailing 34-26.

 

After a Creighton turnover to start the second half, Sitzmann knocked down layup, before Michelle Kaus scored on a three-pointer to keep the CU lead at nine.

 

Sitzmann answered back with a three-pointer followed by a put back from Chastity Reed to cut the lead to four.

 

Over the next four and a half minutes, both the Bluejays and the Trojans scored nine points with Creighton holding the four point edge.

 

Both team exchanged baskets with the Bluejays keeping their advantage.  With 7:20 remaining, Creighton outscored UALR seven to two to open their lead to ten.

 

In the remaining five minutes, both teams knocked down points, but the Bluejays kept the advantage.  UALR lost their opener 67-54.

 

UALR continues women's basketball action on Tuesday as they host Southern Arkansas at the Jack Stephens Center.  Game is set for 7 p.m.
