Box Score HOUSTON, Texas?The UALR women's basketball team and Rice recorded their lowest scoring game of the season as the Trojans lost 49-39 to the Owls Tuesday at Reliant Arena. UALR falls to 2-2 on the season, while Rice improves to 5-1.
Nikya Hughes led the Trojans in points scoring ten and contributed eight boards, while Chastity Reed brought down a team high of 11 rebounds and scored seven points.
Rice scored the first field goal at the 19:11 mark on a jumper by Tiffany Loggins. Reed answered back with a jumper and one to the one point lead.
After Hughes scored on a jumper, the Owls tied the score at five on a three-pointer by Maudess Fulton.
Both teams exchanged baskets with the score remaining tied at ten with 11:20 until the half.
Over the next three minutes, the Trojans scored a field goal on a layup and one by Hughes, while Rice scored two points and free throws to keep the one point advantage with UALR.
With 2:32 remaining until the half, Rice went on a 5-0 run including two jumpers by Morgan Mayse.
UALR scored their final field goal of the half with 31.2 seconds on the clock as Andrea Keys knocked down a jumper to bring the score to 18-15 in Rice's favor at the half.
Both teams exchanged baskets to start the second half with Rice keeping the edge. With 16:33 on the clock, Kim Sitzmann stole the ball and scored on a fast break away layup to cut the Owl lead to two.
Over the next three minutes, UALR held Rice scoreless while scoring four points to take a 27-25 advantage.
The Owls tied the score on a jumper by Loggins and out scored the Trojans 6-2 over the next two minutes to regain the 33-29 lead.
After a three-pointer by Asriel Rolfe brought the Trojans within one, Valeriya Berezhynska scored all ten of Rice's points to UALR's two to give them a 41-34 advantage.
Berezhynska knocked down a jumper with 2:14 remaining, before UALR scored five straight points to cut the Rice lead to 43-39.
Over the remaining 34.4 seconds, the Owls scored six points including four from free throws, while holding the Trojans scoreless to win 49-39.
UALR continues basketball action on Sunday as they host Missouri State at the Jack Stephens Center. Game is set for 2 p.m.
